Last year (2018), the Arizona Cardinals were 32nd in overall DVOA (Defensive-adjusted Value Over Average).

They finish 2019 20th in DVOA. Their offense went from 32nd in 2018 to 13th this year, lead by the second-most efficient rushing attack in the NFL and and the 21st-ranked passing offense.

The defense backslid a little, from 18th in 2018 to 23rd this year. Our rush defense finished 12th, so there are obvious sources of improvement if Patrick Peterson stays clean and Robert Alford is able to come back from injury.

The offensive line finished 21st in run blocking, measured by adjusted line yards, despite finishing in the top 10 in their deeper metrics. It ranked 26th in adjusted sack rate (pass blocking).

Here are the rankings of headline individual Cardinals players:

QB:
Kyler Murray, 21st (15th QBR)

RBs:
Kenyan Drake, 5th (16th in Success Rate)
David Johnson, DNQ (He only had 93 carries, which wasn't enough to qualify; he had a negative rushing DVOA; he was 8th in receiving DVOA among RBs)

WRs:
Larry Fitzgerald, 43rd
Christian Kirk, 50th (4th in rushing DYAR among WRs)
Pharoh Cooper and Byrd had DVOAs around zero.
Andy Isabella had a 33% DVOA, which suggests that all the plays that were called for him were the right ones.

Does the adjusted sack rate factor in the sacks caused by KM? I saw a reported stat a few weeks back that attributed 21 sacks to him out of 47.

Lots of room for improvement. Definitely need a WR 1 next year despite all the sunk cost in it.

Agreed...not sure what it all means but when your best WR is 43rd its not very good.

TB has 3 in the top 34
ATL has 2
LAC has 2
DAL has 2

We have zero!

Sad part is WR still is prob not a top 3 need for this team right now. I’d rate OT DE and ILB are bigger needs. Tossup between OLB and WR are next.

would really like to know how many yards have been missed by K1 this year just due to inexperience

I am trying to figure out how much WR issues are purely WR issues, and how much are due to K1 being a little 1-read-ish

also, while not a total absolution: pairing rookie WR(s) + rookie QB doesn't seem like a formula for a great passing game.

As an example -- DK Metcalf was the only rookie in Seattle's starting offense. Literally, the other 10 guys on the field had at least one year's experience in the NFL and Seattle's scheme.

9 of the 12 playoff teams have a player on that list. That just proves that it takes more than a great receiver or two to make it.

Emmanuel Sanders and Amari Cooper only guys on that list as free agents.

Maybe AJ Green still has something in the tank but the WR free agent class is poop.

@kerouac9

Could these WR rankings have something to do with depth of route? I really think our dink and dunk style hurts us in that DYAR measurement.

I'm not sure how you can't put OLB right up with those other three. We don't have a player under contract that started any games or took any significant snaps at the position this year. I guess Haason Reddick if you want to count him?

Anyways, I still don't really trust DVOA and such. Seems too subjective. But thanks for providing the info, K9.

I mean, it's really hard to make any kind of argument that our wideouts are Actually Good. The strength of DYAR and DVOA is that it emphasizes situation, so that a three-yard catch on third-and-11 isn't as valuable as a three-yard catch on third-and-two. (I think).

DVOA loves first-down cathces, especially in the opponents side of the field.

So,.three don't which I find kind of surprising.

List is probably overloaded for bad teams because they are behind so much and have to throw.

Of those three you have Baltimore which relies heavily on the run game and utilizes mostly tight ends when they throw. New England had Edleman who had a very good season, but ultimately they have never really been known as a team that relies heavily on top end receivers (though their best offensive season by far was when they had Moss). They also have the top defense in the league this year to help carry them to wins. The other team is the Eagles who somewhat like Baltimore rely heavily on the run game and throwing to tight ends in the pass game.

I read an article today that said while Kliff clearly thinks we need better WR production, he's not totally sure he needs a WR 1. He said he was happy with what the WR's had done, things can and will get better(presumably he means the young guys). It was odd after being told 3 weeks in a row on a telecast by announcers that the coaching staff had indicated a need in upgrading the WR situation.

I am fine with taking the BPA and if it's a defensive player great, but we have to improve at WR and it's just hard for me to believe that's going to happen without some new guys. As should be obvious I'm a huge Jerry Jeudy fan I think he'd be our best WR immediately and make a huge impact on our passing game. I hope the stuff Satan said is true and NFL scouts don't have him ranked in the top 15, then we could not only get him, we might be able to move down a few slots and get him.
