The Arizona Cardinals broke with tradition and have already taken care of a contract extension for their young star tight end, Trey McBride. The team announced a new deal with McBride, extending his contract by four years through the 2029 season.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, it is $76 million in new money and includes $43 million guaranteed with $32.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. The extension is worth $19 million per year, a record for tight ends. The previous high belonged to Kansas City's Travis Kelce, averaging $17.1 million per year.

It was a break from tradition, as the Cardinals have traditionally waited until July or August to give players in his situation a contract extension, as we detailed last month.

McBride is coming off a record-setting season for the franchise. After setting the franchise single-season record for receptions by a tight end in 2023 with 81 receptions to go with 825 yards, which was the second-highest single-season total by a tight end in team history, he topped both in 2024 with 111 catches for 1,146 yards. Only Hall of Fame tight end Jackie Smith, with 1,205 receiving yards in 1967 has had more receiving yards as at the position in a season in franchise history.

McBride was scheduled to make more than $5.3 million in 2025, so it would appear that, including this coming season, he is due $81.3 million over the next five seasons.
