The Arizona Cardinals brought back defensive lineman Calais Campbell this month on a one-year contract. Campbell, of course, began his NFL career playing nine seasons for the Cardinals before spending the last eight elsewhere.
His return almost was sooner.
He revealed on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM that the Cardinals tried to trade for him when he was with the Miami Dolphins last season.
That was after the Cardinals had lost Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols to season-ending injuries. They needed help.
"Last year, we were 2-6 and playing with the Dolphins and it was the trade deadline, and there were like eight teams that called and offered contracts for me and the Cardinals were one of them," Campbell said. "So that's when I first realized that Cardinals were interested, and I was 'okay, that's interesting.'"
The Cardinals' interest at the trade deadline stuck with him as he was pondering his future as a free agent.
"You remember all those teams that were willing to trade for you, so I kind of knew that they might be interested," he added.
He said he took the time to rest and then to consider he really wanted "to go through the whole process to be really good at football again."
"I started realizing I want to do this one more time, like, I can go through the fire again. Why not?
"So then I talked to my agent about it and he started to let teams know, and a lot of those teams that were trying for me are trying for me also to call in again."
In the end, "Arizona just made a lot of sense."
Now he is back. Will it be his final season?
"I've been taking it one year at a time," he said. "It's like empty the tank, give everything to that year, and then we'll see what happens afterward. I was pretty confident that last year was gonna be my last year. At beginning of the year, this is my last year. And then after like Week 4, I'm like, I don't know. I don't know, I feel like I'm still pretty good."
So we will see.
