Arizona Diamondbacks close to trading Chris Snyder to Pittsburgh Pirates

EW YORK - The Diamondbacks don't appear to be finished dealing.

Late Friday night, the team was close to trading catcher Chris Snyder to Pittsburgh, though it was unclear what they would be getting in return.

According to a source, the deal needed only commissioner's-office approval to become official.

Any deal in which more than $1 million changes hands requires approval. The Diamondbacks likely are kicking in a significant amount of cash.

Snyder still is owed roughly $8.2 million on a deal that runs through 2011 with an option for 2012.

He is hitting .231 this season with 195 at-bats in 65 games. He has 10 home runs and 32 RBIs.

Snyder has played in 556 games with the Diamondbacks since 2004. He has 62 home runs and and 240 RBIs in 1,626 career at-bats and is a career .233 hitter.

Pirates, D'Backs Agree On Chris Snyder Trade

9:42am: The D'Backs will also receive reliever D.J. Carrasco, reports MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Carrasco has $336K plus incentives left on his contract this year, and he's under team control through 2012. He should be a useful piece in what figures to be a revamped bullpen for Arizona next year.

9:31am: The D'Backs will receive Bobby Crosby and Ryan Church in the deal, tweets Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona. This explains the call-ups today of Argenis Diaz and Jeff Clement, to some extent. The inclusion of Crosby and Church offsets about $883K of the $8.18MM still owed to Snyder.

Can anyone explain why Crosby and Church?

Crosby looks like an Augie Ojeda clone only with power and Church seems like a Cole Gillespie/ Rusty Ryal type. Aren't we just adding to the logjam?

Those guys are only in the deal to send additional salary back to the dbacks although Church is a decent 4th/5th outfielder.
