Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo named right-hander Zac Gallen his Opening Day starter, sticking with his longtime ace rather than giving the honor to the club’s new $210 million pitcher, Corbin Burnes.

This will be Gallen’s third consecutive Opening Day start. He is coming off a season in which he posted a 3.65 ERA in 148 innings.

“It’s going to be a hard decision for me, a hard conversation for me,” Lovullo said early in spring training. “For them, I don’t think so. They’re both professional and they both understand the working dynamics of what’s going on with this ballclub.

"For the sake of team spirit, I think they’ll understand what’s going on.”

Burnes has been one of the top pitchers in baseball since 2021, the year he won the National League Cy Young Award. Last year, he logged a 2.92 ERA in 194 1/3 innings for the Baltimore Orioles.
