I saw in today's news that Torey wants to take pressure off the players and do some things out of the ordinary. Good! I want to be able to root for him.
But he said he might replace batting practice with home run contests. How about line drive contests instead?
Doesn't he realize that is why the D-backs are hitting .210. Our power hitters (when they don't injure themselves) are trying for a HR on every swing instead of being selective.
And the light hitters are doing the same. "Lift" is bull****. It's easy outs for the sake of a solo HR or two. Goldy's recent two solo HR's have not turned the tide.
Hey Torey, how about getting some hitting coaches who will stress line drives -- into the alleys -- up the 3B and 1B lines -- right back up the box if there no shift. Perhaps there won't be shifts if we don't try to pull everything.
And how about recognizing specific problems. Such as Ahmed's inability to hit RH pitching. And Avila not being our best hitting Catcher. And Goldy's declining skills (sadly). And our power hitters playing recklessly. Diving and banging into walls to make one play, then missing a quarter of a season.
Home run contests in place of batting practice are not going to change things. Get serious, Torey! Get technical and address each specific problem as unglamorous as it may seem.
Identify each problem. Solve each problem. That's your job, Torey.
