I stepped out after following the score online and got back in time to turn on the Facebook feed in the bottom of the 10th.

To see the most stupid managerial decision I have seen in a long time. To pitch to the Giants hottest hitter with the winning run on 2B.

And the D-backs lose.

Boxberger and Chafin need to get the act together. Chafin for sure. He hasn't had a good outing in weeks and Boxberger is turning into Rodney.

As the biggest critic of his decline, I am glad to see Goldy start to come around (as I promised I would be if it happened).

But it will take more than a couple of games. Keep up the doubles with runners on base, Goldy.

Diamondbacks' Brad Boxberger: Blows save chance
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Boxberger allowed two earned runs on a hit and a walk to blow the save chance Wednesday against the Giants.

Boxberger entered the game in the ninth inning with a two-run lead but could not secure his 15th save of the season after allowing a two-run home run to Alen Hanson. He has now blown two saves this season and has also allowed at least one earned run in consecutive appearances. His numbers for the season are still strong, so his role as closer should be safe for the time being.

Diamondbacks' Clay Buchholz: Turns in six solid innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Buchholz allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven across six innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.

Buchholz remained sharp, posting his third consecutive start in which he completed at least six innings of work without allowing more than two earned runs. He has been a prolific strike thrower -- he entered Wednesday's start with a 65.7 percent first pitch strike rate -- and began 17 of the 25 batters he faced with a strike in Wednesday's start. While he has flashed other impressive skills, most notably a 21:3 K:BB, Buchholz is likely due for some pushback in his performance as he currently owns a 94.9% strand rate.

When you come back after a “decline” it was a slump. Lol
Or a necessary adjustment to deal with the problem(s) that caused the decline.

Anyway, I hope it is permanent rather than against a certain team or lefty pitchers. He started out the season well vs. the Dodgers lefties and now vs. the Giants lefties. But, oh, the quarter of a season in between.

If a player's "slumps" are going to last a quarter of a season as he gets older, call it whatever you like but it is not going to help the team. Time will tell.

D-backs’ Paul Goldschmidt snaps out of slump in loss to Giants
Has Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt finally figured it out?

Sure, it feels like a matter of if rather than when because of Goldschmidt’s track record, but the team’s most recent series in San Francisco against the Giants was a sigh of relief for fans to at least see Goldschmidt back at that record of hitting.

Goldschmidt had eight hits in the series, including four on Wednesday in the team’s 5-4 loss to the Giants.

An exegetical analysis of the Giants’ relationship with Paul Goldschmidt

The Giants have famously suffered at the hands of Paul Goldschmidt, and in the latest series against him, Goldschmidt went 8-for-12 with 4 doubles, even though he’s had a very bad season up to this point. Is his career success based solely on facing the Giants or are the Giants the least successful team against him? This academic paper purports to answer that very question.

Paul Goldschmidt is the greatest baseball player Bruce Bochy’s Giants have ever seen. There’s no point fact checking that statement, you know in your heart it’s true. Their best laid plans are laid bare by the power and skill of the Diamondbacks’ first baseman to the extent that it defies analysis.

Sports history is replete with athletes who excel against a single opponent — who can forget Calvin Murray’s surprise ownage of Randy Johnson? — and no advanced metric or computer-aided analysis can answer the question of why? with any satisfaction. It’s David vs. Goliath, but with a twist: Goliath (the Giants) has lost to David (Paul Goldschmidt) numerous times, yet believes he can defeat David by attacking him exactly the same way every time.
