Btw, ASU could do a lot better than Bloomquist and Hurley.

Arizona State could bring in a junior college coach better than Bloomquist.
You might be right but do you honestly think they can land someone better than Hurley? I’m skeptical they can. As for Bloomquist, the fact he has never coached on any level and was handed the keys to a blue blood baseball program speaks to the piss poor workings of the athletics department under Ray. I think there might, maybe, possibly, hopefully be a chance Willie can right this thing and get baseball somewhat back to its elite and illustrious past. With each passing week, I fear it is worse though.

Until ASU decides it wants to really go all in on athletics, I fear we will be continuing to see an average to below average performance world of the various sports programs. Some of the Olympic programs should continue to see success but look no further than swim & dive. They win the natty and immediately their coach is plucked by an SEC school

I think it all rests on ASU hiring the right AD who has a vision for the future of college sports.

I'm not sure if they can get it done, but I still hope.

They will need great coaches with loyalty to the school like Frank Kush, Bobby Winkles and Ned Wulk.
I’m not entirely certain what you mean by “coaches with loyalty to the school” but does that kind of thing really exist that much any more?

I doubt there is anything new under the Sun.

ASU once fielded great programs with loyal coaches and can again if they set their sights higher, but they need to keep up with the times. They need to be competitive in the marketplace.

IMO, Michael Crow needs to go.

I agree with the sentence in bold.

Hurley is likely a victim of NIL. The pro model ASU supposedly used to hire Bloomquist looked off the wall from the beginning.

If ASU knows anything at this point, it’s that the pro model doesn’t work lol.

Hurley is a victim of his own incompetence which was exacerbated by NIL. Just my opinion.

The big question for Bloomquist comes this off-season. He is safe unless he decides to resign…which is a possibility. Does he restructure his coaching staff or not? If yes, he has a chance depending whom he hires. If he stays with the status quo, yikes

If only I had a broom. I'd sweep Michael Crow and Willie Bloomquist out the door for sure.

I guess Bobby Hurley gets a small break from me because he can only offer recruits antique playing facilities and pocket change NIL money.

I was listening to the Cover 3 podcast and Bud Elliot, one of the guys on the cast, said that if Miami lands a couple of the DL they have targeted in the portal from Michigan state, he believes that would mean Miami will have a team with $20 million in NIL which would be well above what any other teams would be offering and it sounded like by about $5-$7 million.

This is what teams like ASU are up against.

NCAA is reportedly in deep talks to settle NIL antitrust case.

Watching the Olympics and seeing the swimmers that has a connection to ASU through Bowman and how the legacy and money tied to the Texas job was something that ASU couldn't match just drives it home - even on secondary or "Olympic" sports, ASU just didn't have the horses to keep and retain top talent at any level

So if a coach has great success, the money train will take them away - like in softball when Tricia Ford left

ASU is still a nice program for golf and Thurmond has been a great hire - it just feels like that while the pool of better options is smaller, if one were to open up he would be tough to keep.

So I get going for younger/less experienced coaches with strong university ties and hoping for the best

I'm not sure if ASU is ever going to be more than a mid-tier athletic

Truer words have never been spoken. I have resigned myself to the fact that ASU in pretty much every sport will likely be mid tier or just slightly better. I think they will occasionally catch lightning in a bottle but on average they will be, well, average.

I moved to AZ in ‘87 to go to ASU. They had just beaten Ohio State to win the Rose Bowl and I thought that ASU football was going to be powerhouse for years.

We got a few Sun Bowl and Holiday Bowl wins over the decades but I’m starting to think that perhaps, just maybe ASU will never be on the same level as Alabama and the likes

Select ASU football players are provided with brand new Ford Mustang Mach-E as the Sun Angel NIL has partnered with San Tan Ford.

The NCAA is shortening the transfer portal windows.

The car dealerships and members of SunDevilSource seem to be playing their role in supporting NIL.

It's not a "new" vehicle - it is an 11-year-old Ford Expedition. But it is his, and far better than what Jordan Crook was driving earlier. Good to see the business community beginning to step up.

Preach it Kenny.

Really sad we are at a point where this is part of a post game press conference. College football world is really out of whack
I appreciate the honesty. It's better than ignoring it like before. However, the playing field needs to be leveled as much as possible.

Yeah I struggle with this. These schools bring in millions and want us to fund their athletic department? Coaches get millions and want us to pay for their players? Doesn’t add up for me

It's the glitch where schools can't pay students directly to be there - still "amateurs" and not getting paid to play.

They are able to get paid by businesses and collectives that will use their name/image/likeness for promotional use, etc

Basically above board boosters are good now, as well as some other pathways - short of direct payments

It's funky and when combined with the portal creates a tough dynamic, but it is the landscape
