Payton has already said that he would welcome playing for the Suns BEHIND Nash, and that he knew Nash ran the show here. He also said that he saw that the Suns needed a back-up point that could run the show the way Nash does when Nash is sitting. All of this was said on The Best Damn Sports Show Period by Payton himself a few months ago. Since there has been no enthusiasm by teams going after him, I'm sure they could get him cheaply.

Of course in that same interview Payton also said that he could play alongside Nash in the backcourt. I don't know about the rest of you, but this led me to believe that he would expect more than just the 18 minutes backing up Steve Nash. I think they could work just fine together. The question is whether there is any playing time for him other than as a backup point guard.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Payton here next year. The interest has been pretty thin in him, so we could probably get him on the cheap. Either way it would be worth it. The next best option would be getting Banks, who is better defensively but not good at running a team.

The real mistake of the offseason was not landing Jason Hart, as it only took a second rounder to get him. He was the ideal backup for Steve this summer, and we blew it.
