Army improved on just about every metric in its third meeting with Patriot League top seed Lehigh in Sunday's championship matchup but not the final score.
A cold spell to start the fourth quarter erased a stirring comeback by Army as the Black Knights fell to the Leopards 74-62 before 1,515 fans at Stabler Arena, and with it the automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament.
Army had lost to Lehigh by 39 points in January and 15 points two weeks ago.
With the loss, Army was relegated to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), for the third time. The Black Knights (24-7) will join 47 other teams in the event that begins Thursday, March 20, and concludes Saturday, April 5. The WNIT brackets are expected to be released on Monday.
Senior Trinity Hardy posted 20 points, Camryn Tade had 17 and Fiona Hastick 12 for Army, which shot 45 percent and hit six of 17 threes.
Lehigh was powered with the balanced scoring of Maddie Albrecht, Colleen McQuillen and Lily Fandre - each of whom scored 13. Ella Stemmer added 12 and Remi Sisselman 11. The Engineers shot 60 percent, hit five of 14 threes and 15 of 17 free throws.
The lead changed nine times. Lehigh held a slight 42-38 scoring edge in the paint.
