Dallas hoops recruit Arthur chooses KU

The Kansas City Star
LAWRENCE — Darrell Arthur, the top unsigned recruit in the Class of 2006, has decided to become a Kansas Jayhawk.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Dallas’ South Oak Cliff High School announced his intentions during a press conference at his grandmother’s home this afternoon. Arthur, the country’s 16th-ranked high school senior according to rivals.com, chose the Jayhawks over Baylor and LSU.

I'm certainly no big fan of Bill Self, I think his recruiting tactics are sleazy at best and the thuggery he employed his first few years at Illinois was an embarassment. But the guy can coach and will have Kansas in the Top 5 this year if he can keep everyone happy which is going to easier said than done with about 10 legitimate NBA prospects on his roster.

I'd be more concerned about Self getting out of the first round. If the Jayhawks end up with Butler University for their first round matchup you know who I'm putting my money on. Those 'B' schools are Kansas's kryptonite.

Sorry...had been at the bar before i posted that...

My point was (and i do have one) is that NO ONE turns players into NBA studs like my man Lute. So why would you go to play for a coach who has no where near the success in doing what is every players purpose at that level. Roy Williams i understood but Self has little reputation in turning players into anything but great college players....Deron Williams = garbage and he will always be compared to Chris Paul so he' s got a lot of living up to do. Dee Brown is another guy that will have little success at the next level IMO. The only other guy i can think of who Self recruited who is in the NBA is Luthur Head. He's okay but a 8th man off the bench at best.

I respect Self as a coach but i REALLY don't like that program (along with Duke and Kentucky) and was really just looking for a reason to bash on Arthur's choice, which was curious in that he didn't mention them until the very end (i thought it was Baylor, UA and LSU) which makes me think Self did something sleazy like Mao suggested.

But really it was sour grapes and a bad point made after too many shots of Cafee Patron.

Screw the Jayhawks!

Ok - I mean Deron was first team All-Rookie this year, so that is not a failure...

And Dee Brown's game probably won't translate well into the NBA - but that would be the case no matter who the coach was.

As an Illini, I have to defend my players, even if Self sucks.....I was pissed at him leaving Illinois, but in retrospect, I think we ended up with a much better coach.

Just because you're ignorant of the situation doesn't mean there is "something fishy". KU and Self have been recruiting Arthur since he was a sophmore. They were the first to offer him a scholy this year and they've been on his list from the beginning. So, educate yourself, man. You look foolish.

As for the NBA stuff, Self was recruiting from the great program of UofI. It's not like there is much tradition or history there. They've been a good program off an on (particularly on lately) but it's not a named one. Kansas is a name, a brand. As Majerus once said "Recruiting ballplayers to Kansas is like recruiting alcoholics to New Years Eve parties" I can't help it if you can't see the difference between program and coach because to your school, there is none. Once Lute's gone, you'll go back to sucking.

Really, you have no point, you never did. Unless it was to once again, look like you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to college basketball. You're just an uneducated smack talker who think it's a substitute for knowledge.

I'll take that bet. Not to point out the obvious, but there's a lot of smart, dedicated people not named Lute Olson who run the Arizona Basketball program. Arizona has not gotten to where it's at solely because of Lute, who has admittedly slipped when it comes to in-game coaching and adjustments over the past few years although that was never his strength as a coach. I know you and some of your fellow delusionists who attend cheer for Tempe want it to be that way because you hate Arizona, but it's an opinion based upon bitterness and wishful thinking.

Right now the focus of the program other than winning championships is preparing for life after Lute. That's why inexperienced guys like Miles Simon and Reggie Geary have been getting on the job training. That's why new and updated basketball-only practice facilties are in the process of being built. That's why a refurbishment of McKale or perhaps a new arena is being talked about. That's why Arizona has been lobbying the Pac-10 to ditch FSN and get more nationally televised games.

If you knew anything about the situation (which you don't), you'd know that Lute is really only a figure head these days much like Joe Pa and Bowden are. He's still out recruiting and doing the normal meet and greet type things, but most of the things relating directly to the program are handled by his assistants. They scout the opposing teams, they make sure kids are going to class, they handle most of the player developmental aspects of coaching (with approval of Lute first of course). The people other than Lute who make Arizona Basketball what it is are terrific player development coaches like Josh Pastner and Jim Rosborough, a guy shaping into an excellent recruiter in Miles Simon, and all the trainers that make Arizona one of the best physical development basketball programs in the country. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Don't worry about us, we'll be just fine whether it be Mark Few or Steve Kerr or whoever takes over in what's looking like 2010-2012.

Go Bradley...err...Bucknell.

Yeah Whatever.....

Go 1997 National Champs!

One quick point about me looking foolish goofball. I live in South Florida, follow my Arizona teams closely and sports in general at a pretty broad level. I could have a sports discussion about pretty much anything at a pretty high level with anybody about their passion. I have two jobs one of wchich is a lucrative one in corportate america and the second which is at a upper end bar in down town ft. lauderdale. I have a beautiful girlfriend who I am very fond of and in general have alot more fun than i probably should with the amount of responsibility i have. So i if i didn't follow the up to the minute ticker on rivals.com about the Kansas recruiting of Darrel Arthur TWO YEARS AGO, i think i can be pardoned.

Besides I didn't pretend to have any special insight into the KU program. I'm just going by what i have read in edotorials and reports of how he runs his program and making a genral point about if it "walks like a duck and talks like a duck..." I begrudge Self is a good coach and a master recruiter, but I hate your program and think as good as Self is, you lost a better coach in Roy Williams.

It doesn't need to be rational. I just don't like you guys. Two of my favorite wins were us beating your # 1 seed in 1997 and beating you in Lawrence with the comeback with Jason Gardner and Luke. Some of the most hurtful losses were to KU including the debacle in Tuscon that we lost previous year by like 30 (I was at that game.)

Don't take it personal. I'm just passionate about my school......
