College standouts looking to shine for pros at Shrine Game

By JIM VERTUNO, AP Sports Writer
January 20, 2006

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Texas tight end David Thomas won a national championship, caught 10 passes in the Rose Bowl and holds several Longhorns career records.

Yet his play at Saturday's East-West Shrine Game and workouts over the next three months could do just as much to determine where he stands in the NFL draft.

"It's a learning experience with all the scouts here," Thomas said after about 300 representatives of NFL teams watched a practice. "It's like a job interview."

For Thomas and the other college all-stars playing in the 81st Shrine Game, the week is a chance to chase their NFL dreams and prove they are draft worthy.

Thomas would seem to have already made his case. A three-year starter at Texas, he caught 98 passes for 1,367 yards and 15 touchdowns, all of them Texas career records.

But just about every player at the Shrine game has impressive numbers. The game and practices offer a chance to stand out among peers, said Gil Brandt, longtime Dallas Cowboys personnel director and current NFL.com draft analyst.

It also gives scouts a closer look at players with a view they can't get from film or the pressbox. The Atlanta Falcons had 18 scouts at Wednesday's practice.

"You see who's going to work and who isn't. You see who's jumping to the head of the line in drills," Brandt said. "You watch up close, then go back to the (hotel) and talk to them."

For Thomas, that meant some personal questions about his family upbringing and injury history. He's the son of a school superintendent and never missed a Texas game because of an injury.

"If they're going to invest all that money in you, they want to get to know you," Thomas said.

The practices and games also gets players out of their comfort zone. Thomas spent the last three seasons catching passes from Vince Young.

The quarterbacks on the West team are Texas A&M's Reggie McNeil, UCLA's Drew Olson and Fresno State's Paul Pinegar. The East team quarterbacks are Brett Basanez of Northwestern, Toledo's Bruce Gradkowski and Alabama State's Tarvaris Jackson.

"It's been a little different, especially catching them from Reggie since he's an Aggie," Thomas said.

Thomas expects to be drafted between the third and fifth rounds. Brandt predicts it will be as early as the second round.

"It's like a golf tournament where a bunch of guys are 10 handicappers and a few guys are zero handicappers," Brandt said. "Thomas is a zero handicapper."

McNeil may have done more this week than any other player on the squad to improve his draft status. His passing, decision making and mobility impressed scouts.

Considered by some analysts to be a better quarterback than Texas' Young before the 2005 season, McNeil struggled with inconsistent play and an injury that kept him out of the final game of the season.

"He just looks good," Brandt said. "He looked accurate, threw the ball well, moved well. I think he was the biggest surprise there coming off this year, which was not the best."

The game is heavy on talent at wide receiver.

Oregon State's Mike Hass led the nation with 90 catches for 1,532 yards and is the first Pac-10 player to have three years with more than 1,000 yards receiving. Western Michigan's Greg Jennings was No. 2 in the country last season with 1,259 yards. Texas Tech's Taurean Henderson set an NCAA record with 303 career receptions as a running back.

The players aren't the only ones being evaluated this week. The city of San Antonio has a one-year deal to host the Shrine game, which was moved after 80 years in California.

A lag in ticket sales and interest in the game from San Francisco officials, as well as a desire to have the game more centrally located, prompted the move to the Alamodome, said Executive Director Jack Hart.

Ticket sales hovered around 25,000 the last four years in San Francisco. Shrine officials hope to sell at least that many for Saturday's game.

Almost all of these guys will be day 2 draft picks, but I'll watch it anyhow.

I was saying early in the season that McNeal (not "McNeil") was a better QB prospect than Young. (I don't think so anymore.) He has a stronger arm than Young and is a faster runner. His speed is in the 4.4 range.

If we somehow wound up with McNeal, I think Cards fans would get excited about him.

Who's standing out to you? (I'm not watching)
WR Greg Jennings from Western Michigan is making a killing. He's really making a statement.

Toledo QB Brad Gradowski is someone we should REALLY take a look at as a QBOF with a first day pick.

FSU RB Leon Washington is really impressing.

Reggie McNeal may have had a good practice, he really didn't show it when he was out there.

That's kind of how he was his whole college career. He'd be sensational, (like throwing for four TDs and running for 100 yards to beat #1 Oklahoma), one game, then the next game....not much at all.

QB Tavaris Jackson of Alabama St. Wow, what an arm this kid has...in fact the announcers were commenting that he may be throwing the ball too hard. Good looking athlete...has a nice presence...and, oh, that arm!

Practices for the All-Star games are considered to be more important then the game itself.

He does sound like a Dennis Green type project

Well, I think the game is winding up helping him too. He just threw a really nice bomb and they've scored 3 TDs on his three drvies.

Now he just led them 70 yards on two throws to take the lead. It's the type of stuff he's capable of.

He and Gradowski are two examples of why I think this QB class is so deep. There are going to be some damn good QBs taken after round 1 this year. All you have to do, is figure out which ones. :)

Gradkowski and McNeal are who I want.

Gradkowski first day, McNeal second day if available.

That was one of the more entertaining All Star games I've ever seen. A bomb to the one with 1 second left and then a goal line stand to win the game.

I wanted to check out Bruce Grabkowski. He did very good but QBs should be good looking--He looks like Vin Diesel without his helmet on.
The one that jumped out at me was Sims #77 OG.

Say what? Aren't you the same dude who plays banjo and wants Drew Rosenhaus to be your manager?

I thought McNeal looked very good Saturday. Strong arm. Accurate. 4.37 speed. But better than Vince Young? Hmmm. It's hard to say unless you see them both on the field playing the same opposition at the same time. And Young produced - leading his team to a national title.

Tell you what, though: I thought he looked less unorthodox than Young as a passer and a runner. I agree with Gil Brandt: "He just looked good." The tough thing to evaluate is each player's intangibles and upside. But McNeal at #42 vs. Young at #3 (or even #10) would be mighty inviting.

A better measure of comparison might be McNeal vs. Josh McCown. Aside from the obvious experience issues, I don't think we'd lose very much with Josh gone and McNeal backing up Warner as the heir apparent.

Too high at #10, but if McNeal were to still be around at #42 (or wherever we pick in round 2), he'd be a great pickup.

Note - The other guy who really impressed me was the RB, Howard. Tacklers just seemed to bounce off him all day.

A perfect bomb. McNiel is a project but he'd be worth the risk as a second day pick.

I said that on his first couple of throws, then when he came in during the second half he made me retract some of my statements - and made me say more "UGH!! Why can't he be more consistent?!?!" as example. I'd like to bring him in with a second day pick.

Please read the entire topic before posting, please. :)

Gotcha. Here's how I'd evaluate a guy like that. First off, he apparently was considered a raw project coming into the East West game and then - in a number of instances - showed he could make the plays an NFL QB has to make.

I wouldn't pin the inconsistency label on McNeal as a chronic problem (at least not yet) but it is something worth monitoring. The key to consistency is usually (a) consistent mechanics and (b) the "el gamo slowdowno" component. So any talent evaluator knows is that the kid has tremendous ability waiting to be unleashed, but the unknown element is how well he'll respond to coaching and how quickly he'll absorb the nuances of the game.

All I know is that I liked what I saw - more, for example, than Boller (who went in the first round). I think what we'd be getting is an even more athletic version of McCown along with the possibility (I repeat - possibility) that he'll be a faster learner than Josh.

First of all, McNeal has been a starter in all four of his seasons. So, he's not a raw project. His freshman year, he had the sensational game against Oklahoma, everyone thought he had a world of potential.

His sophomore year was very tough. A&M had a horrible defense and they often fell behind by a lot early. This, and his inexperience, led to a lot of turnovers that year.

His junior year, you could tell he worked very hard and prepared well. At the midway point of last season, he led the nation in passer rating. He had 12 TDs and no INTs. Defenses adjusted, he got hurt, and he didn't finish as well as he started.

His senior year, the article above explained. He could've been a surefire first round pick with a good year, but his off-on perfromances hurt him.
