A's fire Macha despite run to ALCS

So apparently winning Oakland's first postseason series since 1990 wasn't enough for Ken Macha to keep his job.
FOXSports.com has learned that the A's have fired Macha.
The A's averaged 92 wins and captured two AL West titles in Macha's four years as manager. Macha, however, had an uneasy relationship with general manager Billy Beane and, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, also had problems communicating with players.

Macha, 50, had two years remaining on his contract — a deal he agreed to last off-season after rejecting the A's initial three-year offer and pursuing other options. His overuse of relievers was another source of contention with Beane, and according to the Chronicle, Macha also displayed a callous attitude toward injured players.

The A's beat the Twins in the ALDS — their first triumph in five postseason series under Beane — but were swept by the Tigers in the American League Championship Series, four games to none.

A's bench coach Bob Geren and third-base coach Ron Washington will be the leading internal candidates to replace Macha; both interviewed for Macha's job when he was briefly a free agent last off-season.

Beane also had planned to interview former Rangers pitching coach Orel Hershiser, Rockies bench coach Jamie Quirk and Yankees third base coach Larry Bowa before Macha agreed to return.

Ken Rosenthal is FOXSports.com's senior baseball writer.

I don't follow the AL at all, so I don't really have much of an opinion on this move- other than it seems weird to fire a guy who has been a winner.

Second year in a row they "relieved" Macha of his duties.. Didn't make sense last year and makes even LESS sense now.

Sure. Bring him as a backup plan incase Girardi really decides Washington's the place for him.

Grab him.

I dunno about that. He and Melvin have exactly the same level of personality: zero. He's a decent manager but clearly there is a reason why he got fired by the A's. If he's not the right coach for their team, he certainly wouldn't be the right guy for the DBacks either.

Actually they're not the same. Macha has been known to rip people new ones, he doesn't run the team by touchy-feely consensus but encourages a loose, playful clubhouse -- he has done very nicely bringing young players forward successfully. he dislikes being micro-managed however, and although he hasn't played much of a fast game or small ball, supposedly that's one of Beane's influences that Macha has chafed under.

Grab him.
Managers with National League experience do well in the American League.

A.L. managers do not do well in the N.L. (where you actually have to manage).

My feeling is . . . don't grab him.

Willie Randolph, Tony LaRussa, Grady Little (3 outta the 4 NL playoff teams), Phil Garner (2004! WS), Bobby Valentine (2000 WS), Lou Piniella (1990 WS), Whitey Herzog ("defined" NL style ball), Dick Williams (1984 WS), Chuck Tanner (1979 WS) all came from AL backgrounds originally.

Has nothing to do with Ken Macha either way, though.

Come on. Macha lost that clubhouse, not sure why we'd be interested in him.

He came out today saying that Billy Beane interfered with him and told him who to start against the Twins lefties in the playoffs.

Not surprising at all.

Trust me, there's a reason why the A's are going to go with someone like Ron Washington or Bob Guerin as their next manager and not with a guy who wants control like Dusty Baker. There's a reason why the A's didn't even TRY to get compensation for Art Howe when the Mets hired him.

This is Billy Beane's team. The manager is merely a puppet for Beane.
