STURGIS — We have officially started the spring sports season. It is the most intriguing sports season of the year as far as I'm concerned.
As I know you've been paying attention to this point, you have certainly noticed that games and events are already being canceled, postponed and re-scheduled. This is just how it goes in the springtime. The MHSAA has a definitive stop date for all athletics on the year, for a couple of reasons, and because of that all sports have to be completed by that time.
Spring sports often earn the label of "going too fast" and it really isn't that far from the truth. It is what it is, as they say. But as we turn over from the winter sports seasons I wanted to congratulate all of our area teams on a job well done. We did not have any state champions this year, unfortunately, but as we turn the page over to spring sports, I do anticipate more than one title to be earned.
ALLEN TO GOSHEN: Mendon record holder Allen running to new opportunity with Goshen College
WHY CHOOSE: Why choose? Smith gets multiple opportunities in one with Olivet
CUVO TIME: Constantine's Cuvo excited for throwing opportunity with SMC
Now we close the book on winter sports. We had a pair of girls basketball teams win district titles with Bronson and Mendon, the lone boys team to win a district was the steady Colon Magi, led by Steve Vinson. We also had polls for you to vote in for our basketball players of the year.
Listed below are our annual Dream Teams for hoops. I waited until the All-State teams were released (I was a voter once again this year) before this list became open locally. Could it have run earlier? Probably, and maybe it should have, but it's here now and that is what counts for me.
For what it's worth, the volleyball one is listed below as well. Kali Evans of Centreville (11,978) earned 38.33 percent of the total votes for volleyballer of the year, beating Aubree Calloway's numbers of 16.85 percent and 5,266 total votes.
The boys basketball player of the year, voted on by you guys, was Brayden Carpenter of Three Rivers, he was also the midseason winner as well. For the yearly award, Carpenter earned 40.94 percent (5,663 total votes) and beat Dom Mock of Colon's 28.37 percent (3,924 votes).
The girls hooper of the year was Jaedyn Herlein of Constantine. She earned 4,155 total votes for 59.96 percent of the total votes cast, beating Raegan Thaxton of Colon's 28.02 percent.
Anyway, here's to hoping we have a spring season filled with area activities. We should have some strong teams in our area this year spanning from baseball, softball, soccer, track, golf and tennis. Make sure you get out there and see as much of it as you can.
We will also be bringing you athlete of the week polls throughout the spring and Top Performances of the week as well. Be on the lookout for those!
