Glendale Deer Valley point guard Christian Polk gave Arizona State a commitment Sunday night to play basketball.
Polk, who will be a 6-foot-3 senior, averaged 14 points and nearly six assists last season on a team that featured 6-6 guard Joey Shaw (Indiana) and 6-9 center/forward Lawrence Hill (Stanford) and that lost in overtime to Mesa Mountain View in the Class 5A semifinals.
Polk was ranked 85th in the nation in the Class of 2006 in the presummer list by Hoop Alliance and TechSideline .com.
"I think it's a good fit," Deer Valley coach John Fellens said. "He's been showing this summer that now that he is the main focal point, he's still willing to distribute the ball."
Deer Valley recently went 5-2 at the ASU team camp.
The only rap on Polk has been his outside shooting, but Fellens said Polk has been working to improve.
"Talking to ASU coaches, they know that's something that didn't scare them away, because Chris will keep working to improve it," Fellens said. "We're trying to do other things, make him a catch-and-shoot scorer."
