We need to sell out SDS next week vs Utes.
Fortunate to get out of Washington with a win, those conditions were horrendous. Rain and wind gusts up to 61 mph. Kelly already throws a softer ball, but with the wind it looked like he was throwing beach balls out there at times. Balls were sailing on both QB's. I could hardly understand Haller's postgame report with the wind whipping through there.
Solid job by our defense in keeping Washington out of the end zone all night. I think we racked up about 5 sacks, 2 by Hardison, and 2 by Laiu Moeakiola who also forced a fumble. And what can you say about our walk on safety Jordan Simone who had another 10 tackle night and a key interception. Our tackling has improved dramatically since the UCLA game.
Seemed like some very suspect and stubborn play calling down in those goal line situations. Going right at Washington's strength. Their front 7 is the best in the conference. That Kikaha dude is a beast, Carl Bradford on steroids. Anyway, I think Graham has been critical of Norvell being too cute down on the goal line, so that's what we get. A bunch of boring repetitious dives into the interior line, some from a one back set, that everyone knows is coming.
I listened to part of the game on a Seattle radio station that I was able to pick up here in Southern Oregon. There was a WA kickoff return by Brown, called back due to a holding penalty. Anyway, Brown broke it free and almost scored, but was caught from behind by Randall. The announcers couldn't believe it since they said Brown was the fastest guy in the PAC12. Not faster than Randall though I guess.
Despite the boggled FG snap, I think we won the special teams battle. Our punter was killer, 6-8 Paul Crawford blocked a FG, and our coverage was decent.
TK got a head to head hit on that last TD past, wasn't called by the refs, wasn't mentioned by the announcers, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is concussed.
OG Christian Westerman also had a knee injury and did not play in the 4th quarter. That is not good.
Pretty good summary. Not a lot that I can add. I would say that it appears the offense and defense has switched entirely as to what is driving this team to win. I would have liked more points, but will take the victory.
I was frustrated we were unable to score from the 1 yards line, but am really glad we didnt try any outside runs, and the weather was going to make a lob pass to Strong really difficult. Probably the correct call to try and jam it up the middle 4 times in a row. Would have liked to see Ballage on at least one of those carries.
Glad the D-Line has turned it around. Cherry, Latu, and Hardison are light years ahead of who we started the season with. And the defensive backs have really improved as well. The LBs (outside of Moekiola) still have a ways to go. I have a feeling the new recruit Durant will find his way quickly into the lineup next year. DJ Calhoun can be great, but appears to perform best at the same weakside backer spot that Moekiola plays.
Washington has an amazing amount of individual talent on defense. Kikaha just blew me away. I thought him, the nose tackle and the cornerback would look good for the Cards. But Kikaha looks special. He might be a little smaller than we use at the 3-4 OLB, but I wouldn't pass on him. I think he goes in the first round, no later than the second. I think ASU was lucky that they didnt play Shaq Thompsen on defense as we had our hands full blocking those who were out there.
