So I'm watching TV last night and all of the sudden my Yamaha Reciever isn't pushing sound on the DTV/Cable setting.

I turn it off and on and try again. No dice. I flip it to DVD and I get sound from my cable box running through the DVD player. So, the Reciever isn't blown, and the cable box is sending audio out.

I am loathe to pull out all the stuff and check the connections because it is a pain, and because nothing bumped the unit or the TV or anything...could it have come loose somehow?

Is it possible for the one setting to go out while the rest stay just fine?

I have this unit (or one very similar).

If you get sound that way you can do whatever you want. Just for clarification when you say you get sound through the DVD player, you mean you get sound for DTV when you switch the audio to the DVD channel on the receiver correct?

It is possible, depending on the reciever to have one source go out on a receiver. Most receivers have at least a couple independent source paths for audio just like video (video 1, video 2 etc..). I would double check all your settings. Make sure if your DTV source is set to the type of audio connection you have. For instance it should be set to DIGITAL for a DIGITAL connection (Toslink) or ANALOG for an ANALOG connection (RCA's). Also, make sure you have the DTV receiver set to output audio correctly. If it is set to output Dolby Digital and you have an analog connection, you won't get any sound.

If all your settings for both your DTV and reciever are correct, you can't avoid checking your audio connections. It could be a bad audio cable. I know I would much rather find out that is the problem versus finding out a channel on the receiver is blown.

This is correct. I'm just routing the audio from my cable box through the DVD player to the receiver, instead of directly from the cable box to the receiver.

This is what I am afraid of...the way the audio just dropped out in the middle of the show (I thought it was the cable box at first) but then it didn't come back on and when I switched to the DVD source it was fine. It's been working fine for more than a year and a half now, no problems.

I'm thinking I blew the source on the receiver. :(

I should probably take the DVD source inputs and put them in the DTV/Cable ones, do you think? That way I can tell if it is the cabling or the receiver itself, since I know the DVD source inputs currently work? Does that sound correct?

Oh, duh...I also forgot to say that I ran the test on the DTV/Cable setting and all of my speakers created static just fine, so the receiver is outputting to the speakers.

I completely forgot I tested that.

What cable box are you using? Have you tried to go into its internal settings?

If you have the HD/DVR, I believe that you go into the settings by pressing the "Settings" button twice quickly. Check the sound options in there to see if that makes a difference.

Also, I don't think that you have stated whether you are using an analog or digital connection. Whichever you are using, can you try the other?

No problem. I spend a lot of time enjoying my electronics, so I hope that I have some knowledge.

I'm curious to know what changed in your setup that could have caused this. Did you lose power for an extended amount of time or anything?

No, just really odd. I was paused watching a game, then unpaused it. No audio. So weird.

thx again.
