I picked it up from the DraftCity board so take it for what it is worth. The guy is a fan of Nichols.

Austin Nichols of Humboldt St. will play for the Phoenix Suns in the summer league. He had rave reviews in workouts against Luke Jackson, Rickey Paulding, Donta Smith and Sasha Vujacic. The Kings worked him out in late May and the Blazers worked him out a few days before the draft. Two days before the draft he worked out for The Lakers. The day before the draft he worked out for the Suns, and the Nets scrambled to work him out on draft day. The 6’6 shooting guard was one of the elite players in Div. II and has a chance of making the Phoenix squad next year. The Kings tried desperately to get him to play for their summer league team, but he and his agent decided to go with Phoenix because he will get more minutes there. He will be backing up Casey Jacobsen. Watch out for this kid, he was considered to be a top SG in the draft by some people. Casual fans may not know his name, but the NBA know his name and so will everyone else soon.

apparently none of those people were actually in position to draft the kid.

I check some draft sites and can't find him.

The Suns always pick up a bunch of guys for their summer league teams. Most of them have no chance of making the team, but they get into the database if there is an injury.

Well if the kid can shoot 3's then I think the Suns should find a spot for him. I'm sure Danny Ferry didn't exactly go as one of the highest picks...:D

ferry was the #2 overall pick buy the clippers in 1989. the 89 draft may go down in nba history of the worst draft. the #1 overall pick pervis ellison is widely thought of the worst overall #1 ever (kwame brown if he doesnt start putting it together will replace him).

I don't see the Suns landing many 'quality' UFAs this offseason. Their summer league roster is going to be chock full of young players who need to get minutes, and they'll probably fill out their roster with veterans in the fall.

I'm sure there are better opportunities out there for the most attractive UFAs, where they can see themselves sticking with somebody's roster if they perform well.

Right now the Suns have nine players on salary. I expect them to re-sign Dice, sign Vroman, and go after one or two more players (either Kobe or a PG and a big).

Assuming the Suns do the PG/big move, theis would mean 13 players. They MIGHT carry another player on IR, but not necessarily.

14 seems to be the norm for the Suns. Injuries the past few years have made that almost essential. They may take a flyer on a guy out of the Summer leagues. Our coach doesn't exatly play ALL the guys on the bench during the season. I wish he would rotate a few more guys in this year. Otherwise Amare, JJ, and Marion will be spinning their wheels at season's end! :hulk:

Coaches that try to win tend to use their best players a lot. I think things will get better as the Suns add veteran free agents and the young guys get better. In general, the "spread the minutes" philosophy of Hubbie Brown may catch on as teams see how much he accomplished playing that style.
