So this year, instead of making last-minute decisions and buying tickets from Ticketmaster and paying roughly one third the cost of the tickets on top of ticket cost to Ticketmaster (an incredible ripoff and another topic for another day), my girl and I decided to buy a 10-pack of tickets before the season. We went to the box office at Chase and purchased directly, avoiding all BS fees. We bought upper level seats to all Sunday games through August - starting in September we have football to deal with, so we'll buy on the fly for any late games we go to. Buying 10 in advance gets you upper level seats for $14, while they have face value of something like $16 - $21, depending on date. Also we were able to pick seats and are in Row 1 for almost all the games. All in all, a great deal.

So at the last 2 games now, I've been using MLB "At the Ballpark" app on my iPhone to purchase seat upgrades after the game starts. Depending on date/opponent/number of empty seats, the pricing varies. Both games - Padres yesterday (Sunday) and Giants (Tuesday night) before, we were able to upgrade to lower level, right behind home plate, row 22 one time, 26 yesterday, for $9.80 apiece. That's a SMOKIN' deal. We'll now try this at every game we attend and will probably upgrade more often than not, depending on what's offered.

Anybody with a smartphone should give this a try. It's well worth it!

WOW!!! That is amazing. I will try that next time I go.

Do you know what the face value is for your seats you upgraded to?

Thanks for the info :)

We did it again tonight, 3rd time now, all down to the lower level behind the plate, 22 to 29 rows back each time. Tonight we were in 126, row 29, just to the left of home plate, again $9.80 each.

It would probably be easy to scam these upgrades, the ushers don't have a clue about them and barely glance at your phone when you show them your upgrade "ticket" on your screen. The date is written vertically off to the right and I'd bet that it would be easy to reuse the same upgrade multiple times. Not that I'm suggesting that nor am I going to attempt it, just an observation. I'm happy to pay a reasonable upgrade fee.

As to the question of face value of these upgraded seats, I believe it was $49 but varies by opponent/date. Our total cost was $14 + $9.80 or $23.80 each. That's like a sore *******, you can't beat it!

On a side note - what a fantastic game tonight with the dramatic 9th inning walkoff win, after getting to Yu Darvish to tie the game in the 8th. Didi Gregorious continues to amaze. That kid is for real!
