Cardinals end the season by making two very strong efforts and emphatic statements to division foes on the road. The blowout win means that the Cardinals went 4-1-1 in the NFC West and they won all three road games in the division. They have now set a record by winning 6 straight division games on the road.

Here are a mix of game thoughts with ones about next season:

QB:

Carson Palmer is a paragon of resilience. His play the last three weeks has been about as good as any stretch he's had in his 4 year tenure in AZ. Thanks to Palmer the offense has kept on ticking even after MF was cut and today after DJ was injured.

Drew Stanton won his one start this year---but once again today he was wildly inconsistent and turnover prone.

My own feeling is that the Cardinals would be better off if they added a QB who could put some competitive pressure on Palmer---and, in the process, give the team a stronger #2 option.

RB:

Been worried all year about DJ getting injured, largely because of his immense workload and because of his upright running style. This is why coaches stress pad level on contact because a low pad level protects the legs. Regardless, David Johnson was the team's MVP and put forth a running and receiving performance we Cardinals' fans have never seen before.

Andre Ellington played hard, but remains largely ineffective as a rusher.

Kerwynn Williams, on the other hand, runs with a passion and a burst that makes one sit up and take notice. He has emerged as one of the better tacklers on STs---and yes he missed the block on the punt team, but why he was put in the middle blocker role is one of the main reasons why it is completely fair to question Amos Jones' coaching decisions and preparations.

The Cardinals need to add a new RB this off-season---Williams is best as #3 RB---and it would be wise for the Cardinals to have a bona fide bell cow RB threat other than DJ so that they don't overwork him and so that he can get more reps at WR.

WR:

Fitz won the receptions title---although he says it should come with an asterisk. Ever classy. It would be hard to imagine that this was his last game, especially after how much fun the last few weeks of offense were.

J.J. Nelson continues to make strides in the offense. What a sensational catch he made on the deep fade on 4th and 7.

Jeremy Ross played well and scored a nice TD.

John Brown made a solid contribution, despite coping with his sickle cell trait.

The Cardinals need to add another WR to take MF's spot and to have some insurance in case John Brown's illness continues to affect his play.

TE:

Jermaine Gresham was quiet in the passing game but very active in the running game.

Darren Fells ran a perfect corner route and RAC for his TD. That was sweet!

If the Cardinals can re-sign Gresham and Fells, the unit will be solid again. It might be wise to draft a young TE this year, although Hakeem Valles looks like he could be a riser in year two and maybe Troy Niklas or Ifeanyi Momah makes a surprise comeback.

OL:

Harold Goodwin did a superb job of patching up the line. With Mathis, Veldheer and Humphries out, the offense didn't miss a beat---in fact it scored over 120 points the last 3 weeks.

How many times did we hear Aaron Donald's or Robert Quinn's names today? The job that Wetzel and Boehm did at LT and RG respectively was surprisingly good. Watford struggled some with William Hayes, but not often enough to hamper the offense.

Credit should go to A.Q. Shipley for being the glue in the middle. He may be the most unsung player on the offense.

The blessing in disguise for this o=line this year was the development of the young players and the depth of the unit. Humphries, Wetzel and Boehm all showed growth and promise...and they are all physical players.

DL:

Kudos to Peters, Rucker, Mauro, Campbell, Gunter and Williams---who consistently gave Todd Gurley no room to run.

Kudos to Golden and Jones for being dominant again versus a division rival on the road. Golden has been near unstoppable and Jones turned the corner for a strip sack and then stormed the middle off a textbook loop stunt with CC for another with CC meeting him at the QB.

LB:

Kevin Minter has one of his best games---not so sure his hit on Goff was a roughing penalty. But his blitzing has improved and he was a step closer in coverage today.

Sio Moore looks like a keeper. His forced fumble of Tavon Austin was a work of art.

Scooby Wright made a good STs tackle on one of the kickoffs.

DB:

Justin Bethel and Marcus Cooper were good today, both making good platys on the ball, Bethel's resulting in a pick 6.

Patrick Peterson seemed like he was just toying with guys out there and hopefully his antics as a faux punt returner are over, if the team finally acquires a legit return man.

D.J. Swearinger was outstanding in all aspects of SS play. His versatility is a real asset.

How about Harlan Miller at FS? What a head's up rangy interception of the WR pass and he did manage to trip up Gurley on the one potential home run TD opportunity he had.angled his punts very welkl

STs:

Ever since Carson Palmer settled Cat-Man down, he's been fantastic.

Brewer was good and Wile angled his punts very skillfully versus Austin, one time flipping the field in the process.

Give Amos Jones credit for coaching up the FG team to block leapers (Watford). If BA did want to make a change, John Fassell, the Rams' STs coordinator is a real good one, and as of tomorrow, he's available.

Jones did make progress on STs the past two weeks. The punt block and getting beat on a punt pass were not good---and were a reminder of past woes. Hopefully, the Cardinals' STs will improve significantly next year regardless of who is the coach.

BA:

Have to give BA a lot of credit for finishing strong. He set a very positive tone for the off-season because now the team remembers what the joy of good team wins feels like, while at the same time the team knows it has to come back stronger, more confident and much more hungry to make a splash in 2017.

How did we lose to this dreadful team earlier in the year? What a waste.

Couldn't stop Keenum.
No it was actually because of 4 plays. Both safeties missed a tackle on Britts long TD, a Palmer pick inside the red zone, a DJ fumble inside the redzone & a punt return fiasco with 2 mins left in the game.

The Big Red dominated the Lambs in Glendale except for miscues.

Mitch, do you think Penny could be the bell cow rb? I'm going to assume Ellington is gone.

Sio Moore looks like a keeper and someone who could add depth to the ILB position, though, not an excuse to not draft an ILB relatively high. I hope the team brings Scooby Wright back as well.

Regarding Palmer, he doesn't need another QB for "competitive pressure." Dude is his own competitor. Rather, the team needs to look towards the future with the position. The more I think about it, the more I think this team isn't going to draft anyone of significance as this QB class is only a notch or two better than 2013's awful class and Keim isn't dealing assets for Jimmy G or anyone else for that matter. Stanton is likely toast. Let him and Dysert duke it out for QB2 next season.

Would loooove if Scooby can make the team as a Zona fan. You're right about DJ though, the workload is too much, we need another back to take some of that off him and reduce the chance of injury. He will be back and ready to go for next season.

Scooby's great on kickoffs. Every time, he's the first guy down the field. As soon as they put the camera on the returner, you'll see #58 come flying into the scene. Right now, at least against the Rams, the guy looks like he impacts field position. If he continues that in the preseason, I think they'd have to keep him on the roster.

IIRC, we had five turnovers and only took one back. Of all the crazy losses this season, that one really stuck in my craw.

As fun as it was to get a blowout win, let's not forget who we were playing this week. Jared Goff is as green as an unripe banana an the Ram offensive line is God awful. We were vulnerable against competent passers this season(Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton) but it was refreshing to see Bethel and Cooper play better although I'm not sold on Cooper at all. I'm more impressed with the offense scoring decent points on a very good defense in spite of losing our best offensive player(who injury I believe was a catalyst). I honestly believe BA wanted to put up a 50 spot because he believes that DJ's injury was the result of dirty play and considering who the Rams DC is that wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Yep, we played the worse offense in the league yesterday. 16 sacks in 3 weeks albeit against bad Olines in the Rams, Seahawks and Saints. I still have some concerns about Jones, he seems to feast on the lesser Olines but doesn't show against the better Olines. I understand the weaker Olines are where the pass rushers pad their stats but the better ones also find some against the better tackles around the league. Nice to see how the Oline held up against the Rams Dline. Watching the NFL network yesterday I found something interesting, you saw names show up for different teams that normally are not in the game and more than a few had good or really good games. A RB in Cincy had over 100 yds. for example. Seems some TEs had great games yesterday. Makes me wonder why coaches don't make better use of their entire roster. I know they have to name in actives every game which I think is a stupid and archaic rule. I didn't see the DJ tackle as dirty play. He was just unlucky to get his leg caught under the tackler who was trying his best to bring DJ down. It appears that DJ's foot got caught in the turf and he couldn't get it out from under the tackler.

The reason why I think it would be good to acquire a QB who will create some competition for Carson Palmer is how complacent and turnover prone he was at the start of games through 3/4 of the season. This has to change. The last three games were 3 of Carson's cleanest games---but, the playoff pressure was off his shoulders by then.

With a viable option behind him, Carson might be more greatly impelled to play better and smarter, particularly early in games. Plus, it would be a good move to acquire a QB who gives the team a better chance to move the offense than Stanton does.

One of the radio guys (I can't remember which) is convinced that Palmer got hurt at the end of last season and was still working through it in the first half of this season.

I am not sure I buy that but it would explain a lot.

Couldn't agree more. Stanton has to go next year but with BA's loyalty and hard head...I doubt it will happen.

RB:

Been worried all year about DJ getting injured, largely because of his immense workload and because of his upright running style.

I haven't really seen him take any big hits, especially the ones you would expect to see with his upright running style and size. The tackle yesterday was a freak event that reminded me of Leveon Bell.

The Cardinals need to add a new RB this off-season---Williams is best as #3 RB---and it would be wise for the Cardinals to have a bona fide bell cow RB threat other than DJ so that they don't overwork him and so that he can get more reps at WR.

Also agree on KW. Maybe he can replace Stepfan Taylor next year although he shouldn't be the punter protector...he is too little. Either way we need another big back like DJ and a replacement for Ellington (Jaquizz Rodgers would be nice). Maybe Penny can step up next year but not a good sign that he couldn't find his way to the roster this year at anytime.

TE:

If the Cardinals can re-sign Gresham and Fells, the unit will be solid again. It might be wise to draft a young TE this year, although Hakeem Valles looks like he could be a riser in year two and maybe Troy Niklas or Ifeanyi Momah makes a surprise comeback.

I honestly don't understand the love for Gresham. He is a mediocre blocker at best (I personally think he sucks at it), he is a decent pass catcher but we don't throw it to the TE enough to pay 4-5m/year, and he is fiery but that has cost us with penalties. He can easily be replaced and the money we save can pay for Swearinger (see below).

LB:

Sio Moore looks like a keeper. His forced fumble of Tavon Austin was a work of art.

100% agree. He has played very well. Definitely want to see him on the team next year.

DB:

D.J. Swearinger was outstanding in all aspects of SS play. His versatility is a real asset.

He has played really well too. If I had to pick between him and Jefferson, I would pick DJ to re-sign.

This is a theory that Dan Bickley gives often: Palmer had some sort of injury early in the year that wasn't enough to keep him out of practice, but enough to cost him zip on his throws.

There is no expectation that we will ever learn: as an example, Palmer to this day refuses to acknowledge the dislocated finger in 2015 impacted him-- even though in All or Nothing he is on film admitting to Troy Aikman that it was kinda impacting him.

Good points. However, it wasn't for lack of arm strength that Palmer made so many mistakes, the majority of which were mental errors and not valuing ball protection as much as any veteran QB should. Sometimes a QB needs to take a sack or throw the ball away---but Palmer tries to do too much in crowded pockets and throwing into double and triple coverage. Those poor decisions consistently put the Cardinals into a hole. Now---Palmer fights like crazy to answer back, but as we saw sometimes the hole gets too deep and it affects the confidence of the entire football team.

First off, outstanding OP Mitch. I think the back up QB can be upgraded but I don't think if that happens that it will impact Palmer at all. BA isn't benching Palmer for throwing a pick in the game and they both know that. So Palmer will either improve by being a little more careful due to continued coaching or he won't because he's hard wired that way.

I agree Palmer forces throws sometimes (3 or 4 times against the Rams) and some are real head scratchers but I don't think it's because he's lazy or doesn't care. It's his biggest weakness IMO, he doesn't always see the entire field and doesn't have Warner's presnap recognition.

Basically Carson is who he is and we have to live with a couple of warts because the rest is all fantastic. It doesn't matter who the backup QB is as far as motivating Carson. Once again, I would love to see an upgrade to Stanton.

Man I think you're barking up the wrong forest if you think motivation is something needed for Palmer. He's not playing for money or stats at this stage of his career. Particularly with how best up he's getting. He's playing for nothing other than love of the game, desire to win, and likely his teammates/Arians. I found myself reading along your piece amiably until I read this comment about Palmer and then thought, "Mitch is out to lunch."

I would keep Scooby over Alani Fua, Scooby has looked good on special teams, and he hits the "wedge" with purpose.

Thoughts?

My thought is that the more I read about the statistic this team has produced during the 2016 season, the more I see that this team still has talent. 1st in sacks in the NFL, in the top 10 in offense and defense, a plus 59 pts differential, a 4-1-1 record in the division...........

This is such a strange team. I fully believe your team is what your record is, and that 7-8-1. Yet, there are SO MANY question marks for players that are going to be risks to put faith into for 2017.

This team could try to prop this window open for one more year, but its going to be tough, and players like John Brown, Daniel Fells, JJ Nelson, Robert Nkimdiche, Evan Boehm, DJ Humphries, Deone Bucanon, Tyran Mathieu, David Johnson (inj.), Harlan Miller (hype or legit), and Carson Palmer are going to have to be relied upon to play at a high level and STAY HEALTHY.

Not to mention there are some holes that need to be filled in the offseason and a little luck would help with that, AND A GOOD DRAFT!!!!!!!

Time for the offseason, time for a break.

I think all this talk about Palmer's "subpar" first half is so misguided... because his first half was WAY more impacted by our oline issues, Floyd's disappearance, Smoke's unavailability and JJ Nelson's poor start. It wasn't until Nelson got his act together and the oline began to protect ever so slightly better, that Palmer's performances also began to improve.

Fix the "Not So" Special Teams and this team is in the playoffs. Fire Amos ASAP but the fact that hasn't happened yet doesn't bode well.

Palmer is fine, needs no "competition" to make him play better, but needs a more competent backup. No backup they get will EVER threaten Palmer's starting (unless Keim pulls the heist of the century and gets Brady, Big Ben or Drew Brees).

Probably need a bigger backup than KW (keep him, of course) to spell DJ. Not sure what the love for Penny is by some, need a little better than him IMO.

OLine? Kind of agree with Mitch, the youngsters did a fairly decent job. When the injured guys get back, MAYBE be better than it appears on that front.

TE could use some upgrading. Gresham had moments, good and bad, so would be OK if he signed a team friendly deal. Need a better blocker at the TE position IMO.

The defense is OK but there are, obviously, some big decisions to make. I think they will re-tool and be fine on that side of things.

I am not so doom and gloom on the prospects of the Cards being right in the mix for a long playoff run next year. But, I've been wrong before...LOL
