Representatives from two teams called on Friday to express interest in signing quarterback Kurt Warner, said Warner’s agent, Mark Bartelstein.
No offers were made, Bartelstein said, and Warner still prefers to re-sign with the Cardinals.
Bartelstein declined to name the teams that called, and he characterized the contact as “recruiting” calls. At some point, Bartelstein said, Warner will “have to decide” if he wants to listen to other teams.
Bartelstein visited the team’s Tempe facility on Thursday to meet with General Manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt, then returned home to Chicago. He planned to speak with Graves later Friday.
There have no indications a deal is imminent. The two sides are believed to be about $3 million to $4 million apart on yearly average. The Cardinals have offered $20 million over two years, with half of that guaranteed, while Bartelstein is seeking around $29 million, with a higher amount guaranteed.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals stayed out of the fray on the first day of free agency. No free agents were expected to visit on Friday and Saturday. Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden is scheduled to arrive for a visit Sunday night, according to NFL.com and profootball.com.
The Cardinals are shopping for a cornerback to compete with Rod Hood for a starting job. McFadden was drafted out of Florida State by the Steelers in the second round in 2005.
He didn’t become a regular starer until this year, however, when he started eight of 10 games. He missed six games with a fractured right forearm, but returned to start in the playoffs, including the Super Bowl victory over the Cardinals.
It will be interesting to see what contract offers McFadden will receive, because the market for cornerbacks has skyrocketed in the past week. Domonique Foxworth, a part-time starter with the Falcons, signed a four-year, $28 million deal on Friday with Baltimore. About $16.5 million of that is guaranteed, according to reports.
The Cardinals lost a player, running back J.J. Arrington, on the first day of free agency. Arrington, a third-down back and kick returner, agreed to terms with Denver on a four-year deal. Financial figures were not available.
