been seeing more and more ballsy football lately - perhaps a stat geek can verify or debunk but im talking offense (and defense)

some nfl offenses are gambling more than the fans watching - going for it on fourth down becoming more and more the norm - fake punts appear to be on the rise too

it can balance the playing field for a team facing another team with superior talent - simply put - without balls asu would've never competed with texas

take yesterday's games - the commanders and bills let them hang to the floor - time and time again they threw them on the table and said "What?!"

granted it didn't work out for either - but washington wouldn't have been in the nfc championship had it not been for the testicular fortitude

ultimately tho - the cream rises to the top and doesn't have to take such risks - they prefer to avoid them - letting the talent and preparation dictate the outcome

which brings me to the forever under .500 cardinals - would guts equal glory? or just make the movie more gory? we tried ballsy a few times and it didn't really work out far as i can remember

Going for it more on 4th down just seems to be the right move. Surrendering possession is just such a big deal, much more than giving your defense a few more yards. Ultimately there just arent that many possessions in the average NFL game.

As for taking the points on field goals vs. going for it. Field goals aren't guaranteed and a single touchdown +XP is better than 2 field goals.

Do you mean Ballsy or stupid? The latest craze of going for 2 early in games is idiotic. Buffalo did it twice and it put them in a bad spot. If they had just kicked the extra points they would’ve been ahead late in the game.
depends on the philosophy you subscribe to

bills 29 chiefs 32

buffalo lost by 3 pts - if they kicked the extra points they would have theoretically still lost by 1 point

but if they successfully got both 2 pt conversions?

Regardless of the final score, it just changes the dynamic of all decisions going forward. If they had kicked those extra points, I don’t think KC would’ve went for two when they scored that last TD.

I think we are going to see more and more teams going on 4th down ( with reasonable distance) when inside your opponents territory.
A lot depends on the game situation, time, your punter and your defense.
Is giving up possession at the 45 yard line on a failed 4th down worth the 35 -40 yards ( or less) gained on a punt?

I prefer traditional football in most cases. There are times where you should obviously go for it on 4th down.

I'm not a fan of teams that always go for it on 4th down. To me it is a sign of weakness and may get you a few regular season wins that put you into the playoffs by being overly aggressive. However it will ultimately bite you in the ass come playoff time when you face the best of the best each week.

You could also say it's a sign of confidence in the offense by the coaches that they will convert it into a first down. All depends on the angle you are looking at it from. On the opposite side of the coin it can also get you a couple losses which keeps you out of the playoffs.
