Is Barnes still available?

Sure thought the man would bust out with 40 million dollar offers.

Guess nobody wants to pay up. Did he resign?

Would sure fit Phoenix extremely well: Scores 3s, slashes, rebounds, defends.

Consider Matt Barnes a God-like upgrade of James Jones and Jumaine Jones combined.

I like Barnes a lot too. I think GS might re-sign him but not yet. But he plays the 3 mostly? We could get him some minutes....heck....he could play the 4 for us in a really fast lineup. I just think we must prioritize to first get a legit 4 or 5 .....one that is proven productive....maybe the same level of productivity as Barnes but at the 4 or 5 position....able to get more rebounds and defend some in the interior.

But I do like Barnes...he's tough, fearless & can shoot 3's "OK" at 36.7%. If we did get him.... I'd just about resign myself to 100% small ball all year! I still hold out hopes that one or 2 bigs are in the works....now or at least before the Trade Deadline.

I was very pro-barnes right when free agency chatter started up. He would fit here wonderfully.

With grant hill here now the odds of landing him are slim, and it reduces the cash we could spend on a big man. He was also expecting something like the full MLE or even more after his breakout season.

He will most likely re-sign with Warriors but I would give thumbs up to a move to bring him here. Would be a great backup for Hill.

I liked Barnes at the start of free agency but not now. We simply don't need another forward. We need a legit big man more then we need Barnes.

Barnes is too out of control for our system... We need someone with a little more structure.

Even if not a legit big, at least somebody who can rebound and play defense on the inside. Barnes would be nice, but he's not as high a priority.

But he's 6'7" without Marion's hops.

During the regular season Barnes had a good but not great year. 9.8 ppg on 43.8% shooting and 36.6% for three. He did have a very good playoff series, but it is hard to judge a guy based on just one playoff series.

In any case, I do not think he's a power forward even in the Suns tineyball lineup.

Yeah, lets see him guard some 4's we'll see how tough he is. Play him out of position, he may not look so tough. I like Barnes, but he's no where near as strong as marion. Marion plays artest very well, let see barnes play artest on D. The grass is always greener, and some of you guys may be smoking too much of it if you think barnes can defend any 4.

You have to be kidding. Marion has a CAREER 10.0 rpg average and in 2004-05 and 2005-06 averaged over 11 rpg. Barnes has a 3.5 rpg career average.

you're right, I meant that he played more physical than marion. which allows him to get some rebounds that marion might not. As far as I remember he and jackson played the 4 against Dallas and did a good job.

I'm not saying he's better than marion, but a more than capable backup.

The 'D' against dallas was a Nellie doubling scheme, designed to take advantage of dirks tendencies off the dribble(and nellie knows them better than anyone). The double always came from Dirks blind side as he spun away from the primary defender. I give the credit to Nellie and to jackson who bothered Dirk with his up close pressure and long arms. But you know, the only reason jackson could do this is because he knew that if Dirk took him off the dribble to punish the pressure, the help D would always be there. And since the help was coming from Dirks blind side, Dirk wasnt passing out of the double since he didnt see it until he was trapped. I give almost all the credit to nellie for the strategy, not barnes or jackson. The suns will surely be examining that strategy on tape to deal with dirk this year.

Barnes D actually looked better in the Utah series. Jackson's wasn't quite as good.

I want a couple more bigs for the Suns but it is unlikely to happen... at least in terms of quality. I would just settle for a player like Barnes who can get some playing time. Anyway, D'Antoni probably views 6'7" as being big. I sure hope the Suns are not waiting to sign a player that can't play in the Suns system like Jumaine Jones who was signed late last off season. I have a feeling the Suns are looking through the scrap pile again this year. I sure hope they can still get Skinner if he is still available.

In another thread, I suggested the Suns get two inside guys. My suggestions include PJ, Mutombo, or Skinner for the "big big" and an "athletic big" like Louis Amundson. (Skinner is mildly athletic, but his value is that he weighs 265).

Getting two guys (plus Strawberry when he signs) would mean carrying 14 guys, but if they need to unload someone, I'd suggest sending Pike to Miami, a team that is in serious need of three point shooting to replace Kapono.

In any case, I am reconciled to the fact that the Suns are not going to offer much money, so a guy like Barnes seems to be unlikely just because he should get quite a bit more than a minimum contract. To pay that much for a wing seems like an odd decision when stopping Duncan is the biggest problem.

George, just bring in some big bodies that can play a role and I'll be happy, like Skinner and Amundson. :)

It'd be cool to see Barnes on the Suns for personal reasons (local Sac product), though I don't think he comes at a price we're willing to pay.
