Report: Barry Bonds Failed Amphetamine Test
Thursday, January 11, 2007

NEW YORK — Barry Bonds failed a test for amphetamines last season and originally blamed it on a teammate, the Daily News reported Thursday.

When first informed of the positive test, Bonds attributed it to a substance he had taken from teammate Mark Sweeney's locker, the New York City newspaper said, citing several unnamed sources.

"I have no comment on that," Bonds' agent Jeff Borris told the Daily News on Wednesday night.

"Mark was made aware of the fact that his name had been brought up," Sweeney's agent Barry Axelrod told the Daily News. "But he did not give Barry Bonds anything, and there was nothing he could have given Barry Bonds."

Bonds, who always has maintained he never has tested positive for illegal drug use, already is under investigation for lying about steroid use.

A federal grand jury is investigating whether the 42-year-old Bonds perjured himself when he testified in 2003 in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroid distribution case that he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs. The San Francisco Giants slugger told a 2003 federal grand jury that he believed his trainer Greg Anderson had provided him flaxseed oil and arthritic balm, not steroids.

...and he blames it on Mark Sweeney.

#1 Why was he stealing anything from another player's locker.
#2 Why does he always blame someone else?
#3 Why is the guy not in jail yet?

It is always soembody else's fault and every one else is lying about him. Now he is just a hustler/thief/cheat.

The Queen of Denial!

When is baseball going to banish this hack instead of going through the sham of his breaking Hank Aaron's lifetime HR record?

Hall of Fame, Barry? Your magic number will be 23 -- Big Mac's percent of votes for the Hall this week.

If he was found to have a band substance should he have been suspended? Why can he just say it wasn't me and get off?

Amphetamine's aren't a suspension until the second positive test and the first positive test is suppose to be anonymous. The second positive results in a 25 game ban.

When you say a "Band" substance do you mean like a trumpet or a flute? No seriously I totally agree with you.

It's easy for him to blame Sweeney...it was his 1st year with the Giants, last year...You always blame the new guy.

Bonds is ********.

Who cares? Pretty much all of baseball including dozens of guys currently in the HOF used greenies up until a few years ago.

If his story is true... and Mark Sweeney has been taking amphetamines... just think how bad Sweeney would be without them... not a pretty sight:eek:

If the Giants had any balls, they would void his contract and send him packing. They reportedly haven't finished the one year deal they had agreed upon because-

The sides have been working to finalize complicated language in the contract that concerns the left fielder's compliance with team rules, as well as what would happen if he were to be indicted or have other legal troubles.
Giants owner Peter Magowan and executive vice president Larry Baer did not return calls for comment Thursday, but the team released a statement on the situation. Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, and Sweeney also did not return messages. Borris has repeatedly declined to comment on specifics of the negotiations.

Here's the Giants owner, Peter Magowan, stance on illegal performance enhancing drugs:

"The San Francisco Giants are strongly opposed to the use of performance-enhancing substances, including stimulants, by major-league players. Major League Baseball has a strong policy in place to deal with the issue of performance-enhancing substances. The Giants will continue to be supportive of baseball's efforts in this area," the statement said.

While failing a greenie test isn't that big of a deal, it should be in Bonds case. He's facing indictment on perjury charges and has repeatedly said he's never taken performing enhancement drugs. The worst part is he threw his teamate under the bus and took no responsibility for his actions. The guy is an absolute circus clown and is horrible for baseball. For the Giants to turn a blind eye on this one would be laughable

Scott Ostler an SF Columnist was on tv this morning on this point. He said when he asked the giants why they paid so much for Barry when nobody else was bidding the answer was to pay any less would show no dignity for what Barry has done for the team. After this he said why don't the Giants show some dignity now and retract the offer.

I used to be a big Bonds fan but now he can't retire fast enough for me.

Maybe the Giants are paying him the big money so he doesn't take them down with him when he discloses how they might have condoned his use to pump tix sales.

Everyone knows it already and this latest PR nightmare isn'tt helping things. They can longer keep acting like nothings happening, they need to act now and cut ties

This just proves once again Barry is a total jerk. Not only does he pretend he did not know what he was taking, he ratted out a teammate. That is definitely a no no. It just shows Barry only cares about Barry.

He just released a public apology saying he never said Sweeney was at fault. Nice try, Barry. Your attempt to cover your ass is comical. The guy is a complete joke and isn't even a good ballplayer anymore.

"He is both my teammate and my friend," Bonds said in a statement. "He did not give me anything whatsoever and has nothing to do with this matter, contrary to recent reports.
"I want to express my deepest apologies especially to Mark and his family as well as my other teammates, the San Francisco Giants organization and the fans," he said.

Under Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement with the Major League Baseball Players Association, clubs are not notified after a player receives a first positive test for amphetamines.

This seems just wrong to me. The team should get that info at least.

Maybe the Law Enforcement authorities should get the info first.
