A six-run third inning turned the tide for Sapulpa and proved too much for Oologah to overcome.

Despite outhitting the Chieftains, the Mustangs dropped a 9-5 nondistrict road contest Friday evening at Sapulpa High School.

Oologah (12-8) collected seven hits to the Chieftains' six but couldn’t recover after they broke a 2-all tie with a scoring outburst fueled by a two-run double from Ryan Angell.

Sapulpa (7-9) took an early 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Brysen Donnell in the first, but the Mustangs responded in the top of the second when Kaden Fisher singled to right, scoring Wade Peters, and Uriah Hooks brought in Nate Osburn on a flyout double play.

Oologah’s brief lead evaporated in the third, when the Chieftains plated six runs on three hits, highlighted by Angell’s clutch double and Caiden Widdoes’ two-run double.

Sapulpa added an insurance run in the fourth on a balk and another in the sixth via a solo homer from Kason Ashton to make it 9-2.

The Mustangs mounted a late rally in the seventh when Maddux DeVilbiss ripped a two-run double and Wade Peters added an RBI single, but they came up short.

Peters finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while DeVilbiss led the team with two RBIs. Fisher and Hooks each drove in a run.

On the mound, Brandon Lewis took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) over two innings. Starter Logan Mason and reliever Jaxon Penn combined for six strikeouts for Sapulpa.

The Chieftains were paced by Angell and Widdoes with two RBIs each, while Donnell and Ashton each homered. Tyler Sparks went 2-for-2 and added two stolen bases.
