A six-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth — capped by a two-run homer from Tyge Spitzer — proved to be the dagger.

Berryhill defeated the Cardinals 10-1 in a pivotal District 4A-6 matchup Tuesday at home, taking command of the game behind a relentless offensive burst and a dominant complete-game performance from Easton Martin.

The Chiefs (17-5, 10-0 district) improved to 2-0 in the two-game series after also winning Monday in Verdigris, taking firm control in the district standings.

Berryhill jumped ahead in the bottom of the first when Dawson Hedge laced a two-run double on an 0-2 pitch.

The Chiefs made it 3-0 in the fourth on a Collin Brafford RBI single before Verdigris finally broke through in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 3-1 with Boston Acosta’s RBI single that scored Conner Stump.

However, the momentum quickly shifted back to the Chiefs in the home half of the inning.

An error opened the door, then Cooper Barrington delivered an RBI double, Hedge followed with a run-scoring single and Jack Marble added another RBI knock before Spitzer crushed a two-run homer to left to make it 9-1.

Hedge added a sacrifice fly in the sixth for his fourth RBI of the game, capping the scoring.

Martin was in command on the mound for Berryhill, striking out seven and scattering five hits over seven innings.

Acosta took the loss for the Cardinals (14-7, 8-1), allowing nine runs — only four earned — in 4.2 innings while striking out four.

Acosta, who also drove in the Cardinals’ lone run, was one of five Verdigris players to collect a hit. Ethan Hushbeck, Ian Lane, Barrett Marlow and Stump each had a single.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, tallied nine hits and turned two double plays defensively while playing error-free baseball.
