Oologah baseball made a statement Thursday at the Adair Festival.
The Mustangs notched a pair of wins behind two clutch offensive bursts and two standout pitching performances, leaning on Landon Roach’s complete game to edge Kansas 3-1 before riding a three-run homer by Maddux DeVilbiss to a 7-3 win over Sperry.
OOLOGAH 3, KANSAS 1
In a tense, low-scoring opener against the Comets, it was Oologah ace Roach who took command, striking out seven and going the distance to anchor a 3-1 victory.
But it was an unearned run in the very first inning that gave the Mustangs a lead they never relinquished.
Ethan Hadley reached and scored on an error in the bottom of the first, and Oologah added two more runs in the fourth — one on a dropped third strike that brought home Maddux DeVilbiss, and another on a line-drive double by Carson Robertson that plated Asher Streater.
Kansas broke the shutout in the seventh with an RBI triple from Seneca Steele, but Roach calmly recorded the final outs to secure the win.
Nate Osburn led the way at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, while DeVilbiss and Streater each added two hits to keep the pressure on Kansas starter Jordan Haynes.
OOLOGAH 7, SPERRY 3
In the second game of the day, Oologah wasted little time making noise at the plate.
With two runners on and one out in the fourth, DeVilbiss turned on a pitch and crushed a three-run homer to left field, blowing open what had been a scoreless game and giving the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.
That blast followed an RBI single from Roach, who again came up big with the bat, going 3-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs. Oologah added three insurance runs in the sixth, including a run-scoring single by Nate Osburn and an RBI knock by Roach, to seal the win.
Brandon Lewis picked up the win for the Mustangs, tossing three strong innings and allowing just one run. Jett Griswold came on in relief to finish things off.
The Pirates rallied for a pair of runs in the fourth and added a solo homer from Jake Blaylock in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early fireworks from DeVilbiss and company.
