Grant Hastings’ two-run triple in the first inning ignited an offensive avalanche that left no doubt who owned Rogers County bragging rights Tuesday night.
Verdigris scored six runs in the opening frame and never looked back in a 12-2 home rout of Catoosa in District 4A-6 play. The Cardinals (17-8, 10-2 district) tallied 11 hits and capitalized on five walks, four stolen bases and multiple Indian miscues to earn a run-rule win in five innings.
The fireworks started early at Cardinal Field.
After Barrett Marlow and Boston Acosta set the table with a single and RBI bunt, Verdigris tacked on runs with a sacrifice fly from Mac West and a bunt RBI by Landon Wine. Then Hastings roped a two-run triple to right, and Conner Stump’s sac bunt capped a six-run first inning.
Catoosa (10-11, 6-5) responded with two runs in the top of the second, aided by a Cardinals error and a bases-loaded walk. But that is all the Indians could muster against Acosta, who tossed five innings of one-hit ball, striking out four while allowing no earned runs.
Verdigris added three more in the fourth.
After a passed ball scored Marlow, Ethan Hushbeck laced an RBI double and West followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game to make it 9-2. The Cardinals finished the job in the fifth with three straight run-scoring plays from Hastings, Stump and Hutichison.
Hastings went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hushbeck, Marlow and Wine all had multihit performances.
Lane walked three times and helped turn two of the Cardinals’ double plays defensively.
The Indians got hits from four different players but couldn’t string together enough offense. They also grounded into three rally-killing double plays and left the bases loaded in the second.
Verdigris returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. at home against Adair, while Catoosa hosts Tulsa NOAH at 5 p.m. Thursday.
