CHEBOYGAN – Despite only being outside for a second time this spring, the Cheboygan softball team was solid in its home opener on Wednesday.

After losing a 7-0 lead, the Chiefs avenged a four-run deficit, claimed a 12-11 victory in game one, then rolled to a 15-0 win over East Jordan for a sweep in a non-conference doubleheader.

Lydia Kosanke’s three hits and three RBIs lifted the Chiefs (2-2) in game one. Junior Jenna Dodder, who went 2-for-2, hit her first-career varsity home run, finished with three RBIs and scored twice, and Nataleigh Blaisdell and Tessa Lake each had a hit and scored twice. Hannah Whippo also scored two runs.

Kosanke was the winning pitcher, striking out eight, allowing eight hits and walking five in six innings.

Lake went 4-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Chiefs, who saw Kosanke go 3-for-3, and Whippo finish 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Blaisdell, who doubled, had two hits and scored twice, Crawford had a hit and two RBIs, Diem Schley doubled, and Caleigh Easter registered a hit.

Crawford took the win on the mound, striking out three and allowing one hit in four shutout innings.

“Two good wins tonight,” Cheboygan coach Mike LaLonde said. “We needed that after the two tough losses to Traverse City (St. Francis). I’m happy with how we played in the second game, and we hit the ball well. We had eight errors in the first game, and I think we knocked that down to one in the second."

CHEBOYGAN – The Cheboygan baseball team avenged a 13-12 game one loss by responding with a 12-6 victory over East Jordan in game two of a home doubleheader on Wednesday.

Sean Postula’s two hits, including a double, and three RBIs lifted the Chiefs (1-3), while Josh Clark had a hit, two RBIs and two runs scored, Nolan Schley tallied a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, and Phoenix Gomez added a hit. Mantas Jett (RBI, run) and Evan Blaskowski (two runs) also contributed.

James Charboneau was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits over two innings.

In game one, Postula went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Cheboygan. Charboneau, who doubled, had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, Charlie Godfrey recorded a hit and three RBIs, and Mark Munger knocked in two runs. Rounding out the Chiefs were Clark (RBI, run), Schley (three runs) and Warren Farver (two runs).

Postula was the starting pitcher for Cheboygan, throwing 2 2/3 innings with six strikeouts, five hits allowed and one walk. Godfrey, who took the loss, struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Cheboygan goes to the Clare tournament on Saturday.
