Edge has vision, Hightower doesn't (yet). That's the difference. We won't have a running game until Timmy stops running really, really hard for two yards a clip. If Edge goes (and I think he does), we desperately need a back with vision and speed.

Edge is one of the worst starting RB's in the league.

Every team we play seems to have 2 or 3 RB's better than Edge.

That being said....we have clearly seen that the simple threat of a running game is vital to our offensive success.

It frees up the rest of the offense in so many ways.

Imagine next year, how awesome this attack can be with a capable running back in place instead of Edge and his paltry 3 yards per carry.

It will be glorious.

Yeah, but the problem is speed. Hightower fell to the 5th round because of his lack of speed. But he's still way faster than Edge at this point in his career.

I see Hightower as a solid #2 RB for the future with further improvment. We need a #1 RB with speed and given the relatively low number open RB positions in the NFL right now, I would be surprised if a RB wasn't the best player available @ 32.

Just one of the most absurd statements ever posted! You clearly don't know football to make a statement like that. We would NOT be here without Edge anybody feel confident that this team wins the last 3 weeks without Edge? TH is NOT as starting RB the sooner some of you realize this the better off you'll be. Edge would be well over 1000 yrds AGAIN if he wasn't sitting for half the season, he is a workhorse, no he is not a speed back and doesn't need to be he is smart, has vision, get yards after contact, (which lets be honest happens early behind our line), ask TH who routinely gets smoked behind the line. TH runs well LATE in the game after Edge has worn down the D and their not expecting TH burst.

If this team lets Edge walk they had better damn well get a starting caliber RB and not try to sell me that TH and JJ are gonna get it done! They have the money and as far as I am concerned 5 mil for 1000+ yards for this team IS AFFORDABLE! By the way when was the last time this team made a NFC Championship game? This team had better not be cheap this offseason!!!!!!!!

Edge is a good RB at this point in his career. Nashman over states this a bit but I can understand why, too many people bash Edge and at times for the wrong reasons.

My belief is that Edge wants to get a SB ring when he is actually playing for that team. I also think Edge wants his stats and wants the ball. If the Cards win the SB this year then Edge will want to move to a team that runs the ball more and so he can get another pay day.

His lack of break away speed does hurt the team at times. D coordinators don't crowd the box because even if Edge does have a hole to run through the damage is acceptable (6 to 12 yds). 31 other teams have a back that can take the rock the distance.

Having said all this I for one an Glad Edge is on the team and he is a critical piece to our win streak.

please name the 31 other teams and their backs that can take it the distance? Would be very interested to see all these break away backs that apparently every team has except us.

When did I ever say a running back had to take it the distance to be considered better than Edge?

I would be satisfied with a running back that could simply make the corner!!

It would be simpler and easier if you were to just name 3 teams that have a worse starting RB than Edge.

the Texans? Didn't their rookie RB just end up 6th in rushing, running for 1300 yards, 9 TDs, with a 4.8 ypc average while catching 400 yards yards and another TD. Tampa and Seattle's running back both suck tho.

I think he wants to play, more than be paid at this point. When he says he would just quit if he thought he couldn't play anymore, I believe him.

I think stats and a HOF shot are most important to him. He might even renegotiate his deal, if he were guaranteed some carries.

Paying older RB's is a stupid way to run a franchise.

The idea is to get Edge in the first half of his career not the last half, same with ES.

We seem to be the worst team in the NFL at recruiting RB's, we just stink at it, although one of ours did go on to be good after we gave up on him, Thomas Jones.

I myself would concentrate on finding someone who can tell a good RB from a bad one and hire them as a scout and save myself a lot of money and get more production because of it instead of overpaying aging superstars to make up for the fact I couldn't find a RB if they were shaking my hand.

I much agree with your assessments. It is difficult to fine a good "young" RB in free agency. You might get one by trading Boldin who is a young star himself but beyond that we will have to find one in the draft. We have bypassed some excellent runners in the draft and let more than one go who turned out well. A RB's average career is 4 years which is the shortest of any position player in the NFL. By the time you are 30 you are very much on the downhill side. Hightower and JJ have a place on the team but are not first team RB material.
