The attributes of a good assistant (who may be be creative with the X's & O's and inspirational to "his guys") may not translate perfectly to the attributes of the ideal head coach (who needs to have a Big Picture feel for overseeing large-scale programs, delegating responsibility, evaluating assistant coaches, interacting with the media & the community, orchestrating multiple aspects of team play and juggling several balls in the air at once.

Not to say that Ray wouldn't be well-suited for the job, but maybe not (or maybe not yet).

So in a little over a month and a half this board has gone from Ray Horton "stinks" and "should be fired" to being the next hot coaching candidate in the NFL?
lol, ah AZ sports fans. 2 years after our 2nd NFC West title, 3 after the franchise's ONLY run to a superbowl (and almost pulling off a miracle win), half our fan-base wanted to get rid of the only coach to take us there. Even knowing that there was no off-season, a brand new QB and a completely different D scheme. I thought we'd win a couple more games this past season (namely frisco and seattle. Had no idea frisco would be so good), but this is close to how I thought it would end, except with Kolb starting. I do hate the O play-calling though

1 year after our 2nd NFC West title and 2 years after going to the SB the Cardinals were 5-11 with an off season and having released their 1st round draft pick QBF so they could start Dereck Anderson and Max Hall and finished at the bottom of the NFL in almost every statistical category. Then started the following season 1-6. I just don't get AZ fans who think no NFL fans anywhere else would be upset about that.

The KC Chiefs just fired Todd Haley one year after he won the AFC West title with a team that was 2-14 the year before he got there. Jeff Fisher got fired just 2 years after going 13-3. Dick Jauron was fired in Chicago after following a 13-3 season with 4-12 and 7-9. Mike Martz was in the playoffs 4 times in 5 seasons incl a SB appearance but was fired just 2 seasons after going 12-4. Carolina fired John Fox after he went 2-14 despite having taken Carolina to their only SB appearance and going 12-4 just 2 seasons before. Jim Fassel was fired in NY after a 4-12 season in 2003 despite having taken the Giants to the SB in 2000 and grabbing a Wild Card berth in 2002.

So we're not the only ones.

Not to pick nits, but that was Jerry Glanville. ;)

You're right. I just got a picture of Stram on the sidelines in that goofy vest of his in my head when I was thinking of the Not For Long line. :)

good points. I'm a glass half full kinda fan though. I still remember Collinsworthless dubbing us the worst playoff team ever weeks before the superbowl. I have a thing for loyalty more than most though. Whiz gave me something I've never had, I can't write him off after one and a half down seasons. It's not like Matty was a leader, that's why we went to the superbowl in the first place. If he wasn't so weak, Warner never would have started

With all the HC's getting the axe in the NFL, I fully expect Ray Hortons name to surface.

After turning around a forever pourous Cardinals defense, which had to be one of the NFL's top units in points allowed during the last 9 games our DC will probably be gone in a flash with more improvement & possibly even this year.

Before you all laugh me off the board let's look at Horton:

1) Well spoken
2) Played & coached for successful organizations
3) A minority candidate
4) Knows one of the most dominate defensive schemes in NFL history & coached under & learned from a HOF'er
5) Turned around a perenial defensive dormat into a very good, non- household name unit in a short period of time

Cross your fingers it doesn't happen this year Big Red Fans, but be prepared just in case his name silently & quickly rises upward :bang:

Sorry man, I like you and respect you and all but I stopped at #1 "well spoken." Just because he's a black dude that's somehow an attribute. Ridic dude. Totally ridic. Does anyone say Jeff Fischer is well spoken? Because to me it's not the first thing that comes to mind. When I think Mike Martz, the first thing I think of isn't well spoken. Hell, when I think of a coach like Bill Belichick I don't think well spoken. I think hard-nosed, hardcore, great coach, a football guy. Well-spoken doesn't even enter my mind.

I can't even respond to the rest of your diatribe because of it.

You're "well spoken" man, and to me that means go f*ck yourself because you're black and you happen to speak acceptable English.

It's total dumbassery. You don't write perfect English and can't even write a complete sentence half the time according to college English.

It's like in the south, the saying is, if they say, "He's got a lot of spirit!" it means he's a f*cking ****** with no intelligence whatsoever.

Give me a break.

Totally offensive and ridiculous. If that's the best thing you can say about a dude, then you need to look deeper.

And quite honestly Thesmel doesn't speak even nominal English and you don't even give him that respect. It's only because Horton is black that you say that. Like it's a compliment. You should be ashamed. Period.

You should be ashamed calling out someone you don't even know like that. You have no idea what Bucky was thinking when he wrote his post.

Perhaps, I admit I don't know the dude or his motivations or thoughts behind it, but it struck a nerve. He posted what he did, and I posted what I did.

Well sorry you took my comments that way, because I honestly meant no disrespect towards Hortons color. Some of my best friends are african-amercian & I don't even see them for their color...even been in 2 of thems weddings & vice/versa.

Hell, I sound like a hick being from Texas so I'm sure many peeps would say I'm not well spoken as many would seem from the South. Tell me Wade Phillips sounds well spoken? No harm, no foul though Darkside, so take my words the way you want.

Nah, my apologies, I snapped a wire in my brain and went off dude. It's my bad, I don't know you and shouldn't have inferred a meaning to you that you didn't intend. I inferred things that weren't there. No harm, hope you don't take offense and I apologize.

(Edit: and as far as well spoken, I ain't, so don't stress)
