Steve McMichael's battle with ALS has taken a turn for the worse. According to Anna Roberts of WGN News, McMichael is being taken off a ventilator in the ICU and will enter hospice care.

McMichael, the punishing defensive tackle who helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in early 2021. Within months, McMichael became bedridden and lost the use of his muscles, including his ability to speak. With the help of his wife, Misty, a push began to get the man known as "Mongo" to the Pro Football Hall of Fame by way of the Seniors ballot.

In the winter of 2024, McMichael was elected to the Hall of Fame and inducted last August. Misty represented him in Canton during the ceremony, while McMichael received his gold jacket at his home, surrounded by his friends and former teammates.

During his NFL career, McMichael tallied 95 career sacks and earned two First-Team All-Pro nominations. He's one of the best players in Bears history and the heart and soul of the 1985 defense.
