More than a million dollars per week. :-o He gets double A-Rod's salary per year, but still I'm excited to see him coming here even though he's past his prime. Should still be fun to watch.

Umm Real Madrid declined to resign him. There was talk about him signing with some Dubai team.

Oh and btw, Real Madrid right now is a joke and far from a top team.

I think that while you are a good authority on European soccer, you have virtually no knowledge of the way the American's work over here in the MLS. It may not be the RIGHT way, but it is certainly a DIFFERENT way.

LA is a huge market that has a lot of soccer fans here--there is tremendous revenue potential here (mostly due to all the Hispanic people living here).

I just don't see why you have to be a jerk about the whole thing...

To each his own, I hate hockey and basketball but I don't go on those message boards telling everyone about it.

Eh, wasnt so much saying I hate it rather just pointing out I will bcuz the MLS is investing all this money in Beckham to promote it... I can just tell its gonna be a barrage of ads or whatever and itll tick me off.. Like someone in this thread said, they are making an investment, but I dont think all Americans will take it to soccer as much as the MLS think we will.. I could be wrong, never know..

Beckham rejected Milan and Inter to take Galaxy millions

By Sam Wallace, Football Correspondent
Published: 12 January 2007

David Beckham rejected the chance to sign for the Italian giants Milan and Internazionale as well as Marseilles and Lyon in France before he opted yesterday for the best commercial deal at Los Angeles Galaxy and a staggering £128m, five-year contract.

The notion that Beckham, 31, signed for LA Galaxy because he had no chance of playing Champions' League football has been dismissed after sources revealed that he was pursued by some of the biggest names in world football. Internazionale are seven points clear at the top of Serie A and Lyon lead the French championship by 15 points and both are serious contenders in the last 16 of the Champions' League this season.

There were also several mid-table Premiership clubs interested, thought to include the likes of West Ham United, Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United , but Beckham's advisers made it clear that the former England captain was only interested in a move to either Chelsea or Manchester United.

It is understood that Beckham, who had won six Premiership titles and played at three World Cup finals, had no interest in a team scrapping for the Uefa Cup places or worse.

Beckham's salary will top the entire current Major League Soccer (MLS) salary package where clubs have to disclose their salaries. In LA Galaxy's budget, their lowest earner is on $11,000 [£5,650] - the equivalent of a couple of hours' work for Beckham. However, it will be the response of the American public to a Chingford-born boy who does not play any of their three major sports which will determine the extent of Beckham's salary.

It was not clear last night exactly what Beckham will have to do to earn £128m which is, to a large extent, bonus-related, although a source revealed that it was "achievable". In order for him to earn the full amount of bonuses he will not be able rely just on the performance of the LA Galaxy, who finished well out of the running for the play-offs last season. He will also have to earn his team and MLS the kind of profits they crave.

The final Beckham pay packet will be dependent on the television and sponsorship deals that the league earns. Games are broadcast on ESPN, Fox and Hispanic networks, although the size of the $20m annual deal is reflected in players' salaries. After Beckham the highest earner is Juan Francisco Palencia of Chivas USA, who earns $1.36m [£700,000] a year. Incredibly, MLS matches were only sufficiently in demand for the league to charge for television rights for the first time last year. Before then, MLS paid the networks to broadcast games.

The Beckham deal is also likely to include any new endorsements that he signs as well as any potential movie deals that involve him and to earn that full amount he will have to lead a change in American sporting culture. There are still serious doubts that his arrival will finally persuade America to take "soccer" to its heart. LA did not have enough sport fans even to support an American football team and both the Rams and the Raiders franchises have moved on.

Beckham said that, having played for "two of the biggest clubs in football", he wanted the "new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own. I didn't want to go out there [LA] at 34 and for people to turn around and say, 'He's only going there to get the money'. It's not what I'm going out there to do. I'm going to, hopefully, build a club and a team that has a lot of potential. I think that is what excites me."

Although Beckham was full in his praise for Real Madrid, the sour end to his four years there could yet mean that the backers of the LA Galaxy try to reach a deal for him to come to America before the end of the Spanish season. The MLS season starts in April and Beckham was not even named among the squad for the cup game against Real Betis last night.

Faced with the humiliating prospect of being frozen out for the rest of the season, Beckham and his advisers acted swiftly. His personal manager, Terry Byrne, was under pressure from Real Madrid, who wanted an answer to the new two-year contract that has been on offer for weeks. The high-profile LA Galaxy announcement yesterday was the perfect PR antidote to a miserable season for Beckham.

Beckham will join the likes of Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Pele who joined America's first professional league, NASL, in their thirties. The agreement to bring Beckham to LA, however, was a major media deal involving some of the biggest names in the entertainment business.

His vastly complex deal, which will include full control of his significant personal image rights, was negotiated by 19 Management, the show business company owned by Simon Fuller, who lists among his achievements creating the Spice Girls and Pop Idol. He was advised by the American sports company CAA.

For Byrne, Beckham's adviser and confidant, it will be an astonishing pay day. A former masseur with Chelsea, he joined the England squad and was famously the only member of the staff to console Beckham in the immediate aftermath of his red card at the 1998 World Cup

The 250 million dollar man
By David Bond

Last Updated: 2:11am GMT 12/01/2007

David Beckham's extraordinary move from Real Madrid to Los Angeles Galaxy could earn him $250 million (£128 million) over the next five years.

The party's over: David Beckham grits his teeth at Real Madrid
The former England captain's advisers at 19 Entertainment, the business run by Simon Fuller, the founder of the Spice Girls and Pop Idol, believe they have clinched a ground-breaking deal that will help put Beckham's earning power on a par with the biggest names in American sport.

Beckham announced yesterday that he would not accept Real Madrid's offer of a two-year extension to his contract and that he would move to LA when his deal expired in the summer.

"This week Real asked me to make a decision regarding their offer to extend my contract," he said. "After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy."

Under the deal, Beckham will earn $10 million (£5.1 million) a year through his salary with the Major League Soccer side. Although that is less than his $11 million deal with Real, it is understood his total package will establish him as the world's highest-paid footballer.

Greater freedom over image rights should allow him to add $5 million a year to the $20 million he nets through deals with sponsors.

On top of that he is to be allowed to sign a $10 million merchandising deal which will cover the huge boost in shirt sales he is expected to generate.

And, finally, Beckham is set to sign a unique profit-sharing deal with LA Galaxy and the team's owners, the entertainment and leisure giant AEG, which could land him a further $10 million, taking the total package to more than $50 million.

That will take him beyond American sport's existing mega-stars, such as basketball's Kevin Garnett and the NFL's Michael Vick, who earn around $20 million a year.

But he will still be some way short of the richest sports star in the world, Tiger Woods, who earned more than $90 million last year, according to Forbes magazine's sporting rich list.

To accommodate Beckham, MLS chiefs agreed to change their salary-cap rules last Saturday to allow LA Galaxy and all other teams in the league to bust their $2 million (£1 million) annual wage limit.

I'm concerned that Beckham's specialties of free kicks and crossing will be diminished simply because the players on the other end are not as talented as those Beckham is used to. That said, I'm excited he made the move and hope it will spur others to make the move.

I don't think Beckham's as washed up as many people say he is. As he showed in the World Cup, he can still win games with his free kicks.

He isn't slated to play in MLS until July so he has plenty of time to heal unless its something really bad.

I know the Italians don't like him, but the guy is still an amazing player--I'd be pretty excited if he AND Beckham were here.

I wonder what kind of relationship Bekcham and Zidane had while they were playing together in Real Madrid. The big question is how could the Galaxy possibly afford both players?

Some pretty good signings by MLS lately, nobody earth shattering but signings that will improve play of the league...

Juan Pablo Angel
Cuauhtémoc Blanco (even though I personally can't stand him)
Guillermo Barros Schelotto

I am willing to bet next season we'll see more and better quality follow these guys, especially if those players speak well of the league.

Whats really worrying the LA Glaxy is that the MLS Cup is on a Euro Qualifier date for England! Ha! Stupid MLS insists on scheduling games during FIFA International dates and this one might bite them in the butt...although the Galaxy pretty much stink right now and would have to make a major turnaround to get to the MLS Cup (especially missing Donovan for the better part of a month).

MLS needs to get their crap together, stop scheduling games during major torunaments (not sure how many other pro leagues had games going on during the World Cup--MLS did and the Gold Cup is our regional championship yet they ignore this, give the teams a few weeks off and elminate the stupid all star game) and start working around international dates. Better yet how about MLS adopting a schedule more in line with what the rest of the world does? MLS starts when most other leagues are nearing their end.

I'm happy for Beckham and hope he plays well. England hasn't ben very sharp in their Euro qualifiers so far, they could use all the help they can get.

MLS is still trying to get Zidane and supposedly Figo pulled out of his deal with whatever Middle Eastern team he was planning to go to and MLS is targetting him as well and Salas from Chile is on trial with the Chicago Fire right now, if he is in form he'll likely be signed by next week. My guess is that Zidane stays retired and Figo returns to Italy but Salas is signed by Chicago and plays up front with Blanco the rest of the summer.
