It appears (according to Ash) that we are still $9m over the cap. AND, if we stay put this summer, we still lack size and defense to compete against the Spurs in the Playoffs, IMO. Therefore, this is what I expect to see in the first half of the season.

Diaw gets a lot of minutes... three reasons, #1 Give him opportunity to shake last seasons rust off of him and become the $9M man that he is getting. #2 Hopefully with improved play, teams come calling for him - he is traded for an expiring contract, and a pick or two (or part of a package for KG). #3 With increased minutes, Nash and Hill save themselves for the playoff push.

Amare doesn't slip and even show improvement. However, he is constantly in foul trouble due to our small starting lineup. This is the biggest concern for the Suns and they will look to address a trade to increase their size downlow... thus a package of Marion and Diaw is shopped to Minny for KG before the deadline.

Conclusion - if the above holds true, Diaw will be dumped for an expiring defensive big and pick(s).... or Marion/Diaw/Atl08 for KG in order to provide a better front line.

I just don't see how we can beat the Spurs yet... I don't see it. Who is going to stop/discourage penetration of Tony Parker/Manu when Amare is on the bench with foul trouble?

Yeah, moving Diaw in a deal by himself will be nearly impossible, unless there's a team under the cap that really wants him, which strikes me as vastly improbable.

Edit: I suppose Diaw for Gadzuric is not completely out of the question, if Yi revolts and the Bucks are still under the cap in February.

We are closer than you think. If Barbosa doesn't get injured against the Lakers, he doesn't shoot 2-17 from 3 point range against the spurs. If he shoots his usual percentage we win that series.

Now replace inconsistent James Jones with veteran savy Hill...get Boris to get in shape and be more assertive (OK...that last point is a stretch)....

I wouldn't be suggesting he gets moved by himself... well, I guess I was in the first proposition. Mainly, I see his value increasing enough to package with Marion for KG.

We can't have Amare and Marion as our frontline... we may do well in regular season, but hasn't history taught us YET!?

I hope we stay put unless we can get KG. KT could be someone that is traded and that would take away our chance at winning anything, unless the Mavs beat the Spurs again...

yeah and if Joe Johnson didn't break his nose... and if Bell didn't blow his calf... and if Cedric Ceballos didn't get injured... and if....

I am tired of the 'if' in our team History. We need to make the aggressive move now. A small front line will not defeat the Spurs. AND WE KNOW THAT!

Theoretically the Suns could take back as little as $7.2 million in a straight up trade for Diaw. I looked for big men who had shorter contracts without huge accelerations, were on teams near or over the cap, under the tax threshold, and would possibly deal with us. I found one that qualified.

It is easy to say, but hard to do.

You know what's even easier to do? Giving Diaw and his criminal agent everything they demanded last summer and then watch him do nothing all year.

Seriously, of course it's not easy. If it were easy, Isiah Thomas would be a good GM!

That's discouraging...

A lot of people don't know this but it's totally true.

Hot dog! San Jose's top eater wins contest by eating 66 dogs with buns

San Jose's Joey Chestnut won the dubious distinction Wednesday of being the world's fastest eater, setting a new record at the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest in New York and snatching the title belt for the Americans. Chestnut ate - if you could call it that - an astounding 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes. That's a rate of one dog every 10.9 seconds. Takeru Kobayashi, the Japanese competitive eating champion who has won the contest for the past six years, placed second, ingesting 63 dogs during a stomach-turning race to the finish. the Suns Boris Diaw finished third with 42 hot dogs, however, he was also warming up by shoving buttered croissants and Chocolate Profiteroles down his throat just prior to the event. Unlike the winner and runner up, Diaw did not vomit immediately after the conclusion of the contest.

I don't think so. Because he's BYC, the maximum the Suns can take back is only 125% * $4.5 million + $100k, which is a shade over $5.7 million.

Definitely. If it were easy, everyone contender would do it. But there's usually some team in the upper echelon that makes a move that forces everyone else to go, "Wow, how did they pull that off?" The Suns have to aspire to be that team.

Examples?

OK, this is the part of the cap I don't understand. I thought this was a "poison pill" problem before July. Didn't realize base year presented issues after July 1.

Yeah, "poison pill" is even worse -- the Suns could take back even less salary, under some bizarre formula I can never remember (but which is well explained in Coon's FAQ).

Edit: Clarification -- in a poison pill situation, it's the team who would be receiving the player that has the problem, because his "incoming" salary is much higher than his current (low) salary.

Basically, when a player gets an extension with a big raise, it's a poison pill scenario in the year before the big raise, and then a BYC in the first year of the big raise. Diaw is BYC now.

Back to the original point to this thread...

I don't believe the Suns can beat the Spurs with this lineup, unless we go crazy and outscore them by running the entire time... BUT we all know that never happens. NEVER! We need to give up the posturing that 'we can do in the post season what was done during the season'. Popp is too good and D'Antoni is not that good. We need more defense... and it just seems that we demoted our best interior defender, KT, with the Hill signing.

Look at it this way: D'Antoni will NEVER play anyone that disrupts the offensive system. So we can say we need more defense, but the defensive player has to have a jump shot or they won't see the floor. If a player on the floor allows defenses to spare a man to double Amare, that player is worthless until the Suns get a different coach.

Didn't the Suns beat the Spurs in 2 of those games? Take away the suspensions and Barbosa's injury...

...and everyone is talking about how slow defensive teams can't keep up with the new uptempo style of play.

I can see somebody come in for short minutes, but mostly the Suns scheme is to force opponents to guard everybody all the time.

Using Diaw in a straight up trade as the example in both PPP and BYC formats.

Poison Pill (PPP)
Diaw outgoing: $1,870,500
Diaw incoming: $7,811,750

Base Year Contract (BYC)
Diaw outgoing: $4,500,000
Diaw incoming: $9,000,000

I say probally no one gets traded and the suns try to make one more run at it with this team, but I do see maybe Kobe getting traded to the bulls by the trade deadline if not sooner.
