Best ever? Tie Charley Trippi/Larry Wilson. My favorite? Larry Stallings. Prototypical NFL LB.

I'd have to say Terry Metcalf, in my lifetime no Cardinal player did more.

Runs from scrimmage, receiver, punt returner, KO returner. didn't play defense of course.

Not old enough to remember anything before 75.

Conrad, Green, Metcalf. There aren't too many, if any, guys like that now.

Speaking of Green think about this. Everyone talks about how the way the pass defense rules are enforced now has opened up the pass and changed the game but in 1984 Neil Lomax threw for 4,615 yards and 28 TDs and Roy Green had 1,555 yards and 12 TDs.

Fair comparison but #81 beats him 3-2 in head to head :D I would give it to Roy because of the huge differance in TD's & more total points scored.

I have always wondered why Bobby Joe & Sonny Randle haven't had their names in the ROH yet though. Maybe we should get on the Bidwills about this. I always thought him Sonny were 2 bad WR's of their day that never got the credit as to how good they were.

BTW Roy is my all-time fav

Hard to believe Green was with the Cards for three years before he became a full time WR. And people say the coaches always know best. :p

Roy was simply unstoppable that year. I remember him having I believe 4 long TD's called back because of holding penalties, 1 that cost them a victory against the Cowpies in St. Lou. I was in Stl on my Bday 10-21-84 when #81 put Darrell Green in his pocket for 2 long TD's, huge yardage & simply ran away from him all day. I really believe Roy could have beat DG as the NFL's fastest man or been right there with him step for step.

Thanks goodness for those injuries. Cedrick Mack experiment didnt go so well.

The funny thing about 1984 is that had the Cards somehow won that last game in RFK by O'Shankoghues kick or the BS penalty on EJ Juniors sack of Theismann that led to the winning dive, the Cards might have been able to shock the world that year. Dynamic O, solid D...what if?

I have an SI Magazine from 1964 with Randle and Johnson on the cover. The "high flying Cardinals." It sits in a prominent place in my office.

Larry Stallings was my favorite Cardinal. He also the best 18th draft pick that they ever had that I could identify at least. He had a long career.

Sonny Randle was an exceptional receiver along with Bobby Joe Conrad.
He was drafrted in the 19th round.

Pat Fischer was from the 17th round iRC. The receiving corp of Randle and Conrad was complimented with the addition of Jackie Smith. The three of them were an elite group of receivers.

Another Cardinal from that era that was exceptional was OT Ernie McMillan.

I learned to love the Cards following Charlie Johnson passing to those guys.

If i remember corrwectlty Green had a 106 yd KOR TD late against the Cowboys Scumbags to give the Cards the lead.O.J. Anderson had a great game also. The Cards took the lead with about 2 minutes left and then freaking Staubach took the Cowboys right down the fiels to win in the last seconds.I almost got kicked out of the bar for that game.Damn it still ticks me off 30 plus years later.:bang:

Kurt Warner

I guess I needed to be clearer as to the definition of "all-around" player. Meaning a guy who played several different positions. "Multi-Purpose" might have been a better choice of words probably.

So Tom Tupa would have been a better answer among Cardinal QBs. Although he really didn't punt much for Arizona he did score their first ever two point conversion.
