FF X was, simply put, an incredible experience to play and beat. I went back and taped the CGI movies (including the ending - what an ending!) just cause they're so mindblowing.

Coming out in September is FFX-2 - the first spinoff from a Final Fantasy game. You'll take Yuna and Rikku on a quest to find a certain someone from FFX. Looks absolutley badass.

But FFVIII is my favorite of the series.

Wow, you liked 8 the best?

I thought that was the worst Final Fantasy of them all, but that all has to do with expectations. I think I might go and buy it just to kill some time.

FF X, had the best plot of any game I've ever played, and the graphics/animations also are amazing.

I've played it all the way through twice. I do, however, get quite annoyed with some of the side games/quests. The chocobo racing is perhaps the most frustrating game I've ever played.

I was disappointed with the end. Yu-Yevon is quite possibly the lamest boss battle in any game ever. After the battle against Sin and the battle against the Final Aeon Jecht, Yu-Yevon was totally easy. All you had to do was use a zombie attack and then use a phoenix down and he dies instantly.

My favorite Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy II (FF 4 in Japan). It was a turning point in the Final Fantasy series and a lot of the constants that are in each game were established in that one. I downloaded roms of FF II and FF 5 (unreleased in the US) the other day so that I could have them. I tried to buy FF II at all the local video game stores, and they all told me it was a game that no one would ever sell.

I've looked at the screen shots, and it does look really cool, though I'm a little disappointed that Tidus isn't in it (as a playable character). It makes sense, since he was just a dream :D.

My girlfriend watched me beat FF X, and she enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed playing it.

I have all three but I would have to vote for the PS2 just becouse I can use my current enternet access instead of having to give Microsoft more money they don't need. Both the Xbox and PS2 have very close quality. I do like Halo that game rocks!

The graphics might not be up to par with today's standards, but why doesn't FF VII get any love? That is by far the most complete role playing game (at least story-wise) that I've ever played. It also has more than the normal hack-and-slash playability--it also has a lot of different kinds of puzzles.

I recently replayed that one too, and I actually really enjoyed it.

Still, it pales in comparison with FF X imo. The ending was also a little weak for my taste. It seems like it just ends too abruptly.

But it is a quality game, but I'm a bit biased, I like every FF game except for VIII (though as I said, I going to try it out again).

None of the Final Fantasys are true roleplaying...the only common theme is the "fantasy aspect". But I think you already know that Chap! :D

I'm wondering what you consider true roleplaying then, Krang. Just the name alone fits the FF series.

Well, as a former (but still somewhat interested) D&D fan, I can honestly say that Final Fantasy isn't roleplaying.

Roleplaying, at least in my mind, is defined by being able to fully "be" the character or characters you are playing. The Final Fantasy series doesn't give you the amount of choices that generally defines a roleplaying game.

I still love the games though, I don't care that much about putting everything into a specific genre. If you want to define FF as roleplaying, more power to you.

Do you still like the FF series by the way?

Krang, no love for FFVIII? Say it ain't so!

I think I like that one the best cause it was the first one I played. Having avoided RPGs for most of my high school years I was talked into trying out VIII and quickly fell in love. I loved the development of the characters and the nonlinear gameplay. Much like part X, it had a great ending (by endings I mean the actual cinema at the end, not the boss fight). Part VII had a fairly weak ending, IMO.

Part VII was excellent, too (Aeris's final scene is still one of the most powerful events in media I have witnessed), but I'm a little more partial to VIII.

I will say that FF as a series is as close to role playing as you can get. That's what makes them so cool - they completely immerse you in the universe.

Very true.

Though I don't consider the FF series as a true RPG, they're the next best thing. Many of the D&D games just aren't as good, so I've stuck with playing FF.

I've stuck with the series since the very first game for Nintendo. I think that Squaresoft has consistantly put out a quality product, and I can't wait for FF X-2 to come out. It's kind of funny that Square has never done a sequel game, and I think it should be really cool.

Actually, I have never played any of the games after VII, so I can't give you an accurate assessment.

As for role-playing, sure, I understand where you are coming from--the paper and dice games of the eighties and nineties, but if you followed the traditional role-playing model that you describe, it wouldn't be called role-playing. It'd be called "first person shooter". :D

Well, for my two cents worth if we are to base this strictly upon technology, then XBox is the best. I would have purchased an XBox, but every advantage it has over the other consoles, I achieve with my PC.

I have both a PlayStation 2 and a Gamecube. I can't wait for "Gran Turismo 4" this X-Mas, and the new "Resident Evil" games for the Gamecube make it worth it to buy it for those two games alone!

If you have a PS2 and you are still interested, check out FF X. The game is literally mind blowing. The cinematics are mind blowing, the plot is almost like a movie, the characters are well developed, and the soundtrack is imo the best of all the FFs.

The game has more of a realistic look. FF VII had a real strange look, it's almost like the developers at Square all had aneurisms at the same time :D. FF VIII went to a realistic look, and there was an outcry from FF fans, since many feel in love with the cartoonish look. FF IX went back to the cartoon look, and was a pretty good game. And then FF X went back to the realistic look, but no one was really disappointed, since it is the all time best seller for PS 2.

Now, I haven't gone back to the Final Fantasy series since VII. I understood with the SNES, you had a lot of reading because of the technology (FF III kicked ass!). But with both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, it is inexcusable to have to read all the dialogue. That was also the reason I couldn't finish Parasite Eve. Squaresoft titles rock on gameplay, but fall short on presentation.

Has this changed with any of their latest incarnations?

Yep. FF X is mostly talking, except for when you talk to irrevelant villagers.

The soundtrack was so good for FF X that I still hum the songs all the time. I'm going to order the CD soon.

Right on! I bought the soundtrack right after I beat the game. Go on ebay and you can get a new, shrink-wrapped copy of the 3 disc set for twenty bucks. I have that, Xenogears, and the Silent Hill soundtracks from there.

Does it have like all 70 tracks?

My girlfriend (who is very musically inclined) pointed out that the composer used the same song 7 times in a different key.

Best original game soundtrack imo.

I bought it like almost a year after it came out and it was still 49.95  .

If you get for the 19.95 price, you might just think it was the best $20 you've ever spent. Don't even read anything about the plot or anything....that's the best part of the game, even though the graphics are mind blowing for a RPG.

One really cool feature that was added: When you summon, you fight as the summon (or Aeon in this game) until the summon dies. You also can use all the characters in every battle, unlike the 4 or 5 that you can generally use (you get 7 characters).

I got Gamecube and PS2

I don't see many good games coming out soon but Gamecube will get a new versio of Mario Kart.

Gamecube rocks if you like to play against your friends. I hardly use my gamecube and ps2 when I am alone unless I have a new game and not finished it.

I needed like 4-5 days for Zelda and about the same for Metroit Prime but haven't touched them since then.

PS2 is simply not getting any new exciting games and if most of them are available for gamecube as well with better graphics. I am still waiting for a new fighting game because Tekken 4 wasn't very good seriously and neither were Mortal Kombat 5 or the new Virtua Fighter.
