Just wanted to throw this out there--since nobody really like the top 10 Horror movie thread, I figure I'd give it one more try since that top 20 ASFN thread was so popular.

I thought we could keep it to movies that are pretty well known--focusing on great movie moments that will stand the test of time. Classic film is just filled to the brim of these moments from Gone With the Wind to The Godfather. But how many of those "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" moments are there in the past 17 years?

I'll start in the next post...

I have a small few to start off with:

1) Warden Norton pulling down the Raquel Welch poster revealing a gigantic tunnel in the cell wall. (Shawshank Redemption)

2) Verbal Kint limping one second and then the next walking just fine as Keyser Soze. (Usual Suspects)

3) Doesn't seem like much now, but back in 1993, a pivotal moment in movies happened when Dr. Hammond stops the jeeps, and Dr's Grant and Sadler jump out to see a gigantic brontosaurus. (Jurassic Park)*
* This movie now probably isn't given the respect it deserves, but at the time, these effects were the best of their kind, leading to most of the big budget movies we've seen over the past 14 years.

4) Hannibal Lector's Fava Beans and Chianti speech. (Silence of the Lambs)

5) The "You think I'm funny?" speech by Tommy DeVito to Henry Hill. (Goodfellas)

6) Oskar Schindler breaking down after the war ends, saying his ring could have bought him 2 more people to save. (Schindler's List)

7) Will Hunting finally breaking down to his psychiatrist. (Good Will Hunting)

Some more recent ones... (more personal preference)

1) The first coliseum battle vs. chariots. (Gladiator)

2) The Battle of Minas Tirith. (LOTR: Return of the King)

3) The Japanese Night Club gun battle. (Collateral)

4) The car chase through Paris. (The Bourne Identity)

5) The battle in the cave amongst all the treasure. (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl)

I like these.. I havent seen any of the other movies so I cant comment on them.. But Goodfellas and Gladiator are two of my favorite movies..

T2 - Schwarzenegger's transformation into the Terminator as he steals the Bartender's shotgun, then steals his sunglasses, then rides off on his bike, all to the song Bad To The Bone. Cameron's playfull-badassness (if that makes any sense) at his best.

Deep Blue Sea - Sam Jackson's death.

The Sixth Sense - the end, no more needs be said.

Almost Famous - Tiny Dancer sing-along bus scene.

Royal Tennenbaums - opening montage introducing everyone set to Hey Jude.

Fargo - Margie's conversation with Mike at the Radisson. "I always liked you Margie. I always like you so much!"

Swingers - Mikey conversation with Nikki's answering machine.

Pulp Fiction - Jules' recites Ezekiel for the first time.

Cliffhanger - yeah, a pretty damn random one and a pretty awful movie, but an AWESOME opening sequence when Stallone drops that woman.

Requiem For A Dream - cross-cutting three ways at the climax of the movie - Maid Marion, Leto and Marlon dealing with the arm problem/law, and the shock-treatments, devastating.

Reservoir Dogs - Madsen and Stuck In The Middle With You.

There's Something About Mary - The Zipper Scene.

Saving Private Ryan - Opening battle sequence.

Boyz In The Hood - sequence where Cuba and Cube's characters search for Ricky's killer, cutting back to Larry Fishburne with those metallic balls, all to a sick Quincy Jones song.

The Matrix - the entire saving Morpheus run through the end - one of the best action sequences of all time.

more to come - but those are the first things that come to mind.

No rankings, just as I remember them ...

- The rotating camera angles in freeze frame in The Matrix turned a decent movie into one of the most visually stimulating movies of all time. Then, of course, everyone wore the technique out. But the Wachowskis were the first to take advantage of a technique pioneered by a photographer whose name I can't remember. The scene in the lobby still gets my blood rushing.

- The opening 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. I feared I would need counseling for shell shock after the first 10 minutes. Really made me realize I would never make it as a soldier.

- Clerks ... "I'm not even supposed to be here today."

- As Good As It Gets ... "You make me want to be a better man."

- Jerry Maguire ... "You had me at hello" (My wife's choice)

- My Cousin Vinnie ... "The two yout's ..."

- Meet the Parents ... "I got my eye on you Focker"

- Swingers ... "You're so money and you don't even know it."

- Slingblade ... "I like them french fried potaters"

- Memento, when the main character finds out the real story

- The Rock, pretty much any scene with Sean Connery, but especially his comment about winners, losers, and prom queens.

- Castaway ... Tom Hanks' character and Wilson

- Dazed and Confused ... the paddle scene in the parking lot

- Forrest Gump ... shrimp recipes

- Run Lola Run, the running scenes

- The "one shot" in The Player, where the characters are talking about great opening scene "one shots"

ah, yes. "Dad, wanna have a catch?" How could I forget that one moment in recent cinema history which actually gets me to tear up EVERY single time I see it.

also:

Magnolia - All the characters signing Amy Mann's "Wise Up".

Glenngary Glenn Ross - The ABC's of selling speech: "First place gets a new Cadillac...2nd place is a set of steak knives...You know what 3rd place gets? Fired!" Paraphrased...but, I absolutely love that speech. Alec Baldwin at his absolute best. Also like him in The Cooler.

Oh...and Chaplin mentioned the gun battle in Collateral...
But, what about the robery/gun battle in Heat? Probably the most realistic looking and sound action scene I've ever seen...Loved the fact that their was no background music playing.

I feel very strongly about this too. Had JP came out in 2000, it would have been an even bigger movie/event. I definitely doesnt get the respect it deserves. In fact, I am adding it to the queue right now!

Note: I never saw this movie in a theater, which I will always regret.

There won't be a re-release until there is a winner between HDDVD/Bluray.

The whole thing is too traumatic for me. What a cast that movie had.

I started watching OZ again last night. Nothing seems too traumatic anymore.

Children of Men - the scene when the baby becomes visible to everybody (my personal favorite)

I'd also add the scene in Children of Men where they're chased in the car by the angry mob and the assassins on dirtbikes.

I'll also add;

- (Suicide Kings) when Denis Leary beats the girl's abusive dad w/ a toaster

- (Beautiful Girls) Timothy Hutton's "winnie the pooh" speech to Natalie Portman

- (Before Sunset) Celine singing "the waltz" in her apartment to Jesse

- (High Tension) The scene where the girl is hiding under the bed from The Killer.

- (Anchorman) The battle royale between all the newscasters

- (Pan's Labyrinth) When the rebels tell the vicious Officer that they won't tell his son who his father was.

- (Audition) When the main character realizes he's been duped and drugged.

- (Beerfest) When the guys go to recruit Barry for their team.

- (The Limey) When Terry Valentine tells Wilson what happened to his daughter.

- (Silent Hill) When Alessa arrives at the church at the end.

And a few that stand out just for how memorable they are . . .

- (Dracula 3000) Coolio's monologue directed at Erika Eleniak. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNZPhKtFsE0

- (Shark Attack 3: Megaladon) The line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1XOfHax6Q8

-"FREEEEEEEEEEEDAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!"

Before William Wallace gets beheaded at the end of Braveheart. And then when his friend throws his sword onto the battlefield. Love that scene.

Donnie Darko

-There is a sequence where the kids are getting off of the school bus to a tears for fears song. I really like that scene for some reason.

-At the end of Donnie Darko, a sequence showing all of the characters set to the song "Mad World" by Gary Jules. I really think that was the perfect song for that movie and I will always associate that song with Donnie Darko.
