Maybe Adam or someone can straighten me out on the details.

"Button" Salmon was the star of UA's football team when he was injured in a car accident in 1926. On his death bed he reportedly said to tell the other players on the team that when things were going bad...

"Tell them, tell the team to Bear Down"

And a legend was born. :)

Not to show my age, but the best sports-talk we ever had was the original KGME on 1360, maybe 5-6 years ago. At lunchtime, they had a host (John Cannon?) who did call-in trivia. Stuff like "name the 1957 National League All-Stars" or "name the Cardinals starting defense in 1988". Really used to enjoy that.

KDUS is the best of the current bunch. 860 is... well, it's ESPN... and I don't listen to whatever is on 910 (wasn't that KGME before it became "xtra sports"?). KGME was also in 550 for a short time, which I know is pretty irrelevant.

Way back in the day, KCKY 1150 in Coolidge used to be part of the Cubs radion network.

I brought The Cubs to KCKY and before that the Giants and Nebraska Football. The time of my life , thanks for remembering.
My on Air name was Barry Stevens and I did morning drive and programing. What a trip!

GBR

P,S. most Sports radio is horrid at best! KUDS is the best of the lot and only a couple of shows have talent. I like Bill Lewis and Mj except I hate the stupid water cooler at 11.30.

Will never forget listening to the Cubs clinch the NL East in 1989 on KCKY. My cable went out and the radio in the house wouldn't pick it up (I think they turned the power down at night)... had to get in the car and roll it out into the driveway to pull it in. You don't forget something silly like that.

I agree with you, very little of the local stuff is worth anything. I don't know how 3 stations stay in business. I always figured we'd get someone (or develop someone) with a national reputation here, but it just hasn't happened. Instead, we got Arnie Spanier and Tony Femino and Bruce Jacobs, etc.

My radio is locked on KDUS.

Solid sports talk with no BS.

I remember listening one time to Gambo and Ash and all they did was talk about Russian Brides for an hour. Seriously.

Yeah, quite a turnaroud.

I used to listen to XTRA at work from 7a on with Barenaked sports, Rome, F-This, Gambo&Ash - was a solid lineup. KDUS used to be like listening to paint dry on the radio.

I completely switched - Hellestrae is great in the am, and of course you have to like Jurecki and Lewis b/c they try to talk about other sports but it always comes back to FOOTBALL!.

I'm actually starting to like the 3pm show - love how Kemp abuses ignorant callers (that's why I never call :p )

Kemp is the best for that.

I used to love him on his national show. It was the best when some hick from Alabama would call in.

I agree, the show was called loose cannons, and the segment was called lunch bucket trivia. He went on to do a little announcing for the suns.

A few years ago I was working in Portland, OR. Talk about bad sports radio - all they have to talk about is the Trail Blazers.

They used to have to come up with mindless filler to have something to talk about.

"Today we are talking about who do you think the hottest 70's sitcom star was, and what do you think of the Blazers?"

"Our topic is where is the best place to get coffee, and what do you think the Blazer's record will be this year?"

"Who has the best uniform in pro sports, and who should the Blazers pick up with the #23 pick?"

Plus what really freaked me out was that you are NOT allowed to pump your own gas in Portland! Mandatory full-service at all gas stations.

...

Gambo knows boxing and New York Sports, and likes to crap on other state's teams.
He and his partner DO spend too much time on nonsports - I'll get the other stuff from Howard Stern and NPR.
Kemp IS the harshinator and 95% of the time, IMO, knows what he's talking about.
Jurecki is starting to be stronger in his criticisms of the Cards, yet still maintains access. This is a good sign of the franchise getting more confident. I remember when KDUS used to be VERRRRY gentle on the Cards.
"The Pressbox" is annoying - too much of the 2 guys bickering.
For some reason I just don't get into ESPN Radio, one exception being JT the Brick.

Yep, once they use the rope to hang themselves, Kemp doesn't cut them down. He also seems to research sports more than any other talk show host in the Valley. The downside of that is he tends to go off on tangents like explaining in depth about the Memphis Grizzlies offense. But, at least you know he's not just pulling stuff out of his butt like Gambo and Ash are prone to do.
