Venom, pure venom.

Emmitt steals spotlight to ride off into sunset

The Arizona Republic
Feb. 4, 2005 12:00 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

Happy endings?

Sorry, the NFL doesn't have the heart or room under the salary cap. advertisement

So Emmitt Smith went out and made up his own fairy-tale finish, stealing the spotlight by staging a retirement news conference in the middle of Super Bowl week.

It proved that, at age 35, the league's all-time leading rusher can still find the hole.

Somewhere between the tearful farewells and the thunder he stole from former Dallas teammate Michael Irvin, expected to make the Hall of Fame on Saturday, the truth came pouring out.

Relax A-bomb, Bickley didn't say anything that wasn't true. What most people don't want to admit is that Emmitt never wanted to play for the Cardinals but he was desperate to pad his stats and this was the only place to do it.

""My love for football has not changed," Smith said. "I'm in a great place right now. I had a great year last year, in my mind."

In this league, the delusions always last longer than the talent."

THIS is the problem I have with Bickley and other Cardinals haters. Admit that Emmitt had a great season, that is all. Give credit where credit is due. I guess most of the local media and some on this board cant get over the old regime getting the boot A YEAR AGO.

Emmitt had the best season by a Cards' RB since Ronald Moore in 1993. Would it kill the local media and the anti-Emmitts on the board to say, "Thanks for the effort Emmitt, you helped in developing a new attitude here in Phoenix and added to your impressive totals at the same time."?

I wouldn't call last season a "great" one for Emmitt. He didn't reach 1000 yards, and his ypc wasn't that great. It was a solid season, and maybe for a rb his age it was better, but still wouldn't call it "great"

That being said, it is still the greatest single-season for a Cards RB (combo of yards and TDs) in 11 years. That's all I'm saying.

Bickley never has a clue. I'm willing to bet he never played in organized sports. He doesn't know what it is to get a ball in the backfield behind 5 or 6 giants and then have to see the same type of body just across that line. It takes guts and that i'm sure this little knat has none of.

I thought Bickley's column was awful. What's with this "stealing the spotlight" crap we keep hearing? Two week build up for the Super Bowl and there's not enough time for Emmitt to retire in that span? I'd hate to think that the 103rd Terrell Owens update or the 87th "Bill Belicheck is a genius" story might not get the coverage it so richly deserves. Give me a break.

Emmitt wanted to come to the Cards because it was the only place he could continue his career. The Cards wanted Emmitt because the team was seriously devoid of star power at the time. It was a mutually beneficial relationship. I thought Smith was gracious in his press conference.

Smith had guts in spades. The joke we had in college was that Emmitt Smith was a robot. There was a game where he got hurt and the next day they showed him on sportscenter coming out of the hospital in a wheelchair with a neck brace. He then said he'd play that week and he did. Absolutely incredible.

Smith had more than most playing this sport Even when hirt Sith kept his head in the game and helped other teammates. I remember one game that he ran on the field to light a fire under the defense, he wanted to win. It's to bad we got him at the end of his football rather than in the beggining. How much might he have helped Jake as an example? I wrote that Bickley had none.

I agree with you but yesterday Emmitt not only said he had other offers besides coming here originally, he said when word broke he was retiring he was contacted by "several" teams who wanted to find out if he would be interested in playing for them. That was the part of Emmitt's speech I didn't care for he was just trying to say hey I can still play, people still want me, I just want to hang it up. But he did admit we told him we weren't interested.

I have no ill will to the guy at all.

good god the myopia is ridiculous. "great season???" since when does 900 yards representa "great season?"

and best since ronnie moore? what about adrian murrell or garrison hearst's 1,000 yard seasons?

emmitt was adequate AT BEST last year. to argue otherwise is to bring your general football knowledge into question. sorry to be so harsh.

You have to be kidding me, that was a freakin joke, in a wheel chair with a neck brace, that was classic Emmitt. If you were that hurt and needed a wheel chair you wouldn't be able to play the next week. But Emmitt needed all of the attention. It wasn't incredible, it was pathetic.

Adrian Murrell clearly had a better year in 98. He had 1042 yds rushing, 8TDs. He also caught two TDs. But, that's not "lights out" better than Emmitt if Emmitt had played the full 16 like Murrell had, he may have topped it.

Hearst had 1070 yds, but he had only 1TD in 95. Hearst only had 1 TD in each of his first three seasons here, which people bitched about a lot. No matter what you hear now, there was not a great outcry when he was cut. I think most people would take 8 more TDs instead of 100 yds.

Maybe Emmitt's real contribution to this franchise will be a refusal of us to accept the crap we've taken from RB over the years. If an over-the-hill Emmitt, behind a line everyone knocked, can put up numbers that stand up with Arizona's best RB (overall career-Hearst) and the starting RB on the only playoff team, why should we patient with guys like Jones, McElroy, Pittman or Shipp? There is no reason we can't demand 1,000 yd 10 TD seasons from our starting RB every year now.

Sadly as Cardinal fans we have become so accustomed to pathetic play at a number of positions that any form of improvement makes some here think that we have something equal to the avg to the rest of the play. The problem often relies often on people not actually comparing our players with the rest of the league but instead with former Cardinal players/units.

Our running game and OLine were both in the bottom 1/4th of the league in terms of rating. Yet when you compare it to past Cardinal teams in those areas, it was a major improvement.

We have to stop comparing with former Cardinal teams and instead hold them to a higher standard ... namely that of the rest of the NFL.
