the state of the NBA.

He mentioned that the athleticism of these players are overtaking fundamental skills. Hence, the low-scoring.

Players are simply to athletic to be fooled (re: T. Prince block on Miller).

Quick enough to recover on defense. Even if they get beat by a couple steps.

All the fundamentals in the world won't get you a bucket if you don't hang by the rim. Or, hang in the air (re: Kobe double-clutch off the board).

A pick and roll is met by a 6'11", 245 lb. gazelle waiting for you.

When was the last time you've seen a backdoor? If you have, how many?

How many classic point guards are left? Stockton was the last of a dying breed good enough to be successful. A PG now must be able to score. He must be able to play D down low.

You want fundamentals? Watch Princeton.

You want to see freaks, in an elite class all by themselves? Watch the NBA.

In a league with minimal offensive fundimentals, it is not unreasonable that the most athletic team wins.

Actually good ball movement does make a difference. The Kings were a contender because they move the ball and move without the ball. And yes, they get backdoor plays.

However, it is certainly true that as coaches spend more and more time working on defense it makes it harder for opponents to score. Good defense is fundimental basketball too. Still, teams that cannot score 60 points need to ask if they are working enough on their offensive fundimentals.
