I think a great selection for the Cardinals would be Jim Tressel, the Ohio State coach. I doubt that he is interested in leaving his present job, however. But after this year, he has little left to prove in term of his coaching prowess.

Simply an excellent coach!

You can't argue with his record. I doubt that he would leave OSU.I don't like his politician persona but as a coach,he as good as there is going right now. There was a rumor earlier that he may be intersted in coaching the Browns. That, i could see. He's from Ohio and i would doubt that he leaves the state. Of course, OSU does go to Arizona every year for a bowl game so maybe he'll just stay out there. Out of the college coaches, i do think he has the best style to transition to the pro game. He runs OSU like a professional team.

Wrong! Rivera might have played for Ryan, but as a coach he's a disciple of Andy Reid/Jim Johnson.

Rivera is an understudy of one of the best DCs in the NFL on perhaps the best run team in the NFL. That's why he's a hot candidate for a HC job.

And, besides that, it's an NFL head coaching job. Most assistants will go for the job, hope they turn it around or, failing that, hope that people don't fault him if he fails at the job.

I kind of like the Bob Stoops idea and knowing the Bidwill mindset it makes some sense. Remember that in the last 40 years, the Cardinals have had a ton of head coaches, but only 1 came directly from the college ranks: Bud Wilkerson. Any guess where Wilkerson coached at? You got it, Oklahoma. This has Bill Sr. written all over it and as wierd and and distant as he may seem , he is a football purist through and through and a traditionalist and if he is going to go with a college coach, he will go to a long standing proven program.

Look at Bidwill's hiring practices over the last 3 decades. He tends to hire guys from organzations he has some affiliation and history with:

Joe Bugel, Jim Hanifan-Redskins (old NFC rivals)
Gene Stallings-Cowboys (old NFC rivals)
Buddy Ryan-Eagles/Bears (old NFC rivals and strong connection to the Bears)
Vince Tobin-Colts/Bears (once again, strong connection to the Bears)
Dave McGinnis-Bears (once again, strong connection to the Bears)
Rod Graves-Bears (no need to repeat)
Bud Wilkerson-University of Oklahoma (old school traditional football program).

From looking at this, it starts to make sense why Bob Stoops and Ron Rivera are coming up as top candidates. Bidwill goes back to places he feels comfortable with. He has a long standing relationship with the Bears (most likely from the Cards days in Chicago), and he is a traditionalist.

Stoops would be the last on my list, I would be all for giving Carroll another shot at the NFL and Rivera wouldn't bother me a bit.

The most important move is not the Coach but having a GM who has the authority to select the coach. We do not need any of the Bidwill family to select a coach anymore than we want them piloting the 747 we are on. They might own the 747 but that does not mean they can fly it.

so whom do you think rivera is a disciple of????? hint...his last name is ryan

so what do you think buddy will advise his "grasshopper" to do if the job comes....before you answer remember that coaching this team has been a graveyard for the 40 eerrr...will be 41 before him.

take your time.

When it came to defense Ryan was as good as it could get in Chicago. Probably the best defensive team ever when he was the DC. Of course as a HC he sucked.

I would prefer not to have a college coach as our next head coach. The chance of a college coach being successful as a NFL head coach is not very high. Many top OC or DC don't become successful head coaches. To be honest, with the list of likely candidates I would rather keep Green for another year.

Why would you say that? Look what Bud Wilkins and his QB option did for the Cardinals.

He really isn't a Ryan disciple...at least not like Jeff Fisher is/was.

Rivera has cut his teeth coaching under Jim Johnson and Lovie so I think those would be his mentors and he would throw some Ryan stuff in but not much.

I dont want a college coach. We are a playoff caliber team, we need someone who has NFL experience to come in here and set things straight and put us over the top.

I We are a playoff caliber team,

That we are not. This offseason will tell us if we are playoff caliber but right now were not close. We have 2 good WR's and Pro Bowl RB who is useless unless we get 3 more above avg lineman. We need a DB (maybe 2), a DE, 2-3 OL, an entire coaching staff, a WLB, and a FS (depending on what we do with Rolle). We have plenty of holes
