Big Red's Mascot Convention Diary

March 25-30, 2003

Hey there everybody!! I have just returned from an incredible trip to visit with my friends at the 3rd annual mascot convention in Tampa, Florida. We had a great time discussing new ideas and showing video of ourselves in action. I hope that you're as excited as I am for the upcoming season that will be filled with new tricks, flips, stunts and gags - and that's before the game even starts!!

President Bush visited the day before, but I think the soldiers were just as excited to see us. We caused quite a raucous during morning chow, and then got in trouble when visiting the children at the hospital. For some reason, we create a great deal of mischief when we all get together! Sir Purr (Panthers) was dancing in the hallways, while Swoop (Eagles) and Blitz (Seahawks) were racing with TD (Dolphins) and Captain Fear (Bucs) in the wheelchairs! Poe (Ravens) ended up getting run over by an out of control gurney and required brief medical attention. A small skirmish broke out that involved Jaxson De Ville (Jaguars), Pat Patriot (Patriots), Roary (Lions), and T-Rac (Titans), but it was quickly resolved before anyone got hurt.

In the evening we all attended an event aboard the Yacht Starship dinner cruise. Yours truly ended up onstage playing guitar while Billy Buffalo (Bills) belted out 867-5309! It was a sight to behold as all the mascots ended up dancing the night away with plenty of bewildered dinner guests! Freddie Falcon (Falcons), Rowdy (Cowboys) and Sir Purr had a little dance competition and Big Red was there to bust out some backflips!

The next day's events included a visit to the Tampa General Hospital, and the University Community Hospital. This time we were well behaved and enjoyed ourselves with the patients. A local news station followed us around the hospital as we visited with the kids. It was a great experience for all of us as well as the children.

We got to spend some time on a street car later in the day and once again ended up creating quite a stir among those on board. For some reason people tend to stare as us when we go out. It must be quite a site to see! We ended up serenading the passengers with our versions of "Sweet Caroline," and "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling." It was so much fun!!

Our last day together took us to St. Petersburg Beach @ the Trade Winds Resort. Billy Buffalo and Freddie Falcon stole the show as they showed up in Speedos!! We all played some volleyball, and spent some time in the Gulf. It was a really nice relaxing day for all of us. That night our friend Thunderbug of the Tampa Bay Lightning invited us to join him on top of the St. Pete's Forum for their game against the Panthers. He is staying on top of the Forum until they sell out their first 2 playoff games! We had a great time giving out T-shirts and eating dippin’ dots. The trip was great and I am excited to share all of my new ideas with you! I would like to send my thanks out to Captain Fear and his special lady Mary for hosting such a great event. I'd also like to thank all of our sponsors* and the city of Tampa. We all had a great time and look forward to coming back to visit with you all real soon. (*Thanks to - Starship Dinner Cruise, HARTline Trolley, Beef O'Brady's, Channelside, Duck Tours, TECO street car, and our visiting vendors, Signs and Shapes, Benchmark Segways, Aerial Concepts, and StaCool Vests. )

I think Ace Ventura Pet Detective might have been even funnier if he was trying to rescue that mascot.

Why? It's all about the atmosphere and getting hyped for the game. Mascot's and Cheerleaders are all part of it. Heck just get rid of the National Anthem and big scoreboards while your at it. Then we can all sit quietly, never leave our seats, never yell, just sit in a stupor as if on some heavy tranq's and somehow think this was a great day? Sh*t your anti-christ, anti-god and now anti-fun? Sounds like you want a stadium to be more like the church you hate than a fun event.

I would have to say that Big Red is one of the better Mascots in sports.

I don't know...maybe I am biased.

AZcards21:

oh yeah - i"m anti fun. Tailgating 3 hrs before each game, solid red, yelling my head off at the game, high fiving friends and strangers alike.... It's not like Steelers home games are church, either!
Also - sometime this next season, my band Dephinger (brownthumb) will play at Camp Cardinals Avengers in that parking lot on the north side of the stadium.
I'd be all for replacing the national anthem with a Cardinals anthem....

Only 3 hrs? Amatuer, we start at 4 in the morning!-JK! Gotta have cheerleaders they are just part of the whole show and thus my reference to getting rid of everything else if you don't have them. Post what game you'll be playing before. I'd like to check it out. A good Cards tune would be a cool thing to have but nothing can replace the National Anthem. No way, No how.

cool

...JK about replacing the nat. anthem - I'll stand and face the direction everyone else does just like every other time. I'll be sure to post when the rock and roll is gonna happen. Probably be another band too.
If the cheerleaders went topless, I'd be into it.
