Who made the bigger mistake in the draft, Phoenix prematurely moving the #7 pick or Orlando trading a future 1st round draft choice for Jameer Nelson.

I thought the Suns would hold on to the pick until the last minute to pursuade the Magic to do the deal for T-Mac. If they would have held out, it would have given them more options. Even if the Magic did not want to do the deal Igoudala was available and would have been a nice addition. Does not make sense.

If the Magic wanted Nelson bad enough to send a 1st round pick to Denver for him why not take the Suns offer of Marion, Jacobsen and the #7 (pick Nelson) and hold on the their future #1. Does not make sense.

I guess it was the Suns fault for dealing the pick too early.

Your scenario assumes that all these actions happen in a vacuum. They don't. One move begets another and so on and so on. Its not like they are all made at the same time.

Hindsight however, seems to makes fans think they have the ultimate understanding of what went down.

I can only imagine that there had to be some type of communication breakdown or a complete dimissal, either of one side or of both, of our offer for T-Mac. Because there is nothing left to offer the Magic except JJ and Marion and I do not think that is likely.

How bout Chicago's top three protected pick next year? Heck, one could argue that since they traded with the Nugs, they were set for this year, and now they NEED a good first round pick next year. Chicago's pick gives them that, and with all the pessimism around here, we can assume the Suns are lottery bound next year and we could always offer that pick, right?

Hey, where in CO are you? Recognize my avatar?

Lone Tree.

It looks to me like the Nuggets and the Suns have the same play book. Trade with teams that look like they may be lottery bound so that you have the continual potential to have a lottery pick and keep cap space. That play book must have been authored by the Pistons who 2 years ago went deep in the playoffs and then had a lottery pick (Darko).

Don't know Lone Tree. Asked because my avatar is the Denver city flag. The Mrs. and I are ramping up for a return to Denver from NYC in August.

It's near the Tech Center just in between Highlands Ranch and Parker.

wow, so you dont think it when something like this . (day before the draft)
(suns)ok magic here is your last chance we'll give you marion, jj and the 1st, but tmac must agree to forgo his option and you have 5 minute to do this or deal is off. what is it going to be?
(magic hold hand over mouth piece of phone) tmac please i can get this good deal out of the suns if you will forgo your option? come on can help the team out here?
(tmac) **** that man, what am i going to do if i get over there and they dont give me enough shots? this year i got almost all the shots on the team, if i go to pheonix they will want to give some of my shots to amare. at least if i go to houston i have that big stiff that doesnt need the ball as much as amare. heck if i went to the suns people might see that i am not as good as they think i am.
(magic) sorry brian cant do it.

It was never going to be JJ, Marion, and #7.

But it could have been Marion, Jacobson and Jameer Nelson. Add them to Okafor and Varejo. Keeping the future first rounder. Keeping Juwan Howard, Tyrone Lue and Reese Gaines and making other deals possible.

It looks like its now Cato, Francis, and Mobley. Added to Howard, Nelson and Varejo. Losing a future first rounder. Losing Juwan Howard, Tyrone Lue and Reese Gaines.

There's certainty and quality personalities in the first scenerio. There is uncertainty and questionable personalities in the second.

If Wiesbrod really wanted Jameer Nelson why not do the Suns deal, I think the NCAA player of the year and the "real" NCAA player of the year would have made a great tandem.
