I agree but the athleticism of Newton weighs in his favor. Both these guys are projects.
Agreed, just as the accuracy weighs in Gabberts favor, IMO.

not really
Wow, look at this write-up on Gabbert from walterfootball in their mock:
Gabbert is constantly out of shape, terribly inaccurate and the product of a gimmick offense. But because of his size, arm strength and upside, he's widely considered to be a top-10 prospect. I give up.
Whats the difference between him and Mallett? Don't say accuracy because Mallets % was higher this year in more of a downfield offense.

Intelligence and leadership have been mentioned. Gabbert also is a bit more mobile. Mallet urinates when he sees a blitz coming, but Gabbert also makes poor decisions at times.
Hey I'll take inaccurate with a 63.4% completion percentage over the sub-60% guys we had this year.
Apples and Oranges. 63.4% is actually pretty low for college football. Where as above 60% is the standard in the NFL. 63% doesn't even put him in the top 30 QB's in D1 football.
Combine that with his captain check down impression with a staggeringly low 6.5 yards per attempt and his completion % looks even worse. And by low I mean being ranked 99th out of 115 QB's.
For comparisons sake Newton was chucking the ball down the field at a nation leading 10.5 yards an attempt and had a 67.1 completion %.
I sort of like Gabbert, but it would be gasp worthy if they drafted him at No. 5. He's a curious prospect. He has a really quick release and can get the ball downfield, but accuracy greatly declines the further downfield he throws. He's often a backfoot thrower, and with that short-armed quick release on the fade, he looks like Dan Freakin' Marino. His footwork goes in and out. Sometimes he's tech perfect. Sometimes he's a clown.
He can definitely make all the throws, but you watch that offense he runs and it's the glorified run and shoot. You have to throw out most of his stats, or reduce them by 30 percent or something. He is somewhat mobile, but he doesn't make a lot of stellar plays in the passing game when he's on the run. He'll get you 8 yards on the scramble, but you're probably not going to see him complete a long pass on a broken play or anything. Also, I'd love to see Missouri's YAC stats, because a lot of those yards started out of bubble screens and short slants. I guess the good news is he's pretty accurate on those.
It's hard to get a read on him. Him and Newton are the only legit 1st round prospects IMO, and I can't say with any confidence I'd want to be the GM that drafted them in the Top 10. OTOH, both do have really high upsides.
