Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said the team has "pretty much agreed to terms" with catcher Henry Blanco on a new deal.

Reports indicate the deal is worth $1.2 million.

The Diamondbacks purchased an insurance policy at shortstop Wednesday, agreeing to terms with defensive specialist John McDonald on a two-year deal.

McDonald, whom the team acquired from Toronto in August along with second baseman Aaron Hill, had filed for free agency earlier this week.

Shortstop Stephen Drew still is rehabbing from the season-ending ankle injury he suffered in July, and his status for Opening Day remains up in the air. Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers said last month that he wanted to prepare for the possibility that Drew wouldn't be ready to start the season on time.

I am shocked about McDonald resigning. All I have ever heard is that he is beloved in Toronto and that he was incredibly happy there. i would have bet anything he would be heading back there.

Glad I was wrong.

I really hope the Dbacks make some kind of splash in free agency. Not for CJ Wilson of course, but I would love seeing them doing something to add to talent of last year.

I just hope we don't have a repeat of the Eric Byrnes fiasco. We had a lot of guys that played much better than their historical norms this year. Hope we don't give out big contracts for one year's abnormality.

Who would you put in that category?

Parra - no - young, improving, will only get better (and not arb eligible yet)
Montero - no - young, improving, will only get better
Goldschmidt - young - not arb eligible yet
Upton - already paid well
Young - already paid well

Roberts (slugging percentage went off the charts)
Kennedy (Bad for Yanks, Good for us)
Putz (best season since 2007)

I am a little worried that some of the new guys may come down to earth, but we don't have any reason to think this year was an anomaly until they get a few more years under their belts. (Hudson, Collmenter, Goldy, Parra)

Roberts maybe - or is this just a product of regular playing time?

Kennedy? Not worried.

Putz? Under contract, not likely to get extension.

Wasn't Putz a 2 year deal? If so, I could see them extending him after such a productive year, but I wouldn't do it yet.
