I was cleaning out my bookcase this weekend and came across this magazine.

Man I was so pumped. I had been pimping for the Suns to get McDyess for a year before the Suns made the move.

I remember watching a 3/4 court ally-oop pass. These two sure were fun to watch.

Hopefully we have the next incarnation on the court with Nash and Stoudemire. I hope the Nash/Stoudemire era lasts longer than this one did.

Go SUNS!

LOL

I thought about that cover when I found this one. Not sure why I held onto it. It represents my shattered dreams I guess.

I still blame Kidd for losing McDyess to FA that year.

Wasn't that Bryan C's first year at the helm? I remember thinking we gotta sign this guy long term while we got him, WTF are they waiting for? I kinda remember Bryan C. in an interview year's later admitting he blew it.

Yes but that offseason was also the lockout. The front office screwed up there is no doubt. I don't know if that was BC's first year or not. They set themselves up for the old FA rules and then the rules changed. In the end McDyess leaving wasn't a money or cap issue it was a recruting issue.

If Van Exel can recruit McDyess to Denver, Kidd could have done the same for Phoenix if he thought it was important.

It was mishandled from start. Bryan fell victim to the old cliche about not negotiating during the season because it can become a distraction for the player. But then things got screwed up with labor action, so he lost control of the process.

Another problem was that McDyess did not get along with Ainge. McDyess WANTED to be a PF while Ainge played him as if he was just another wing guy - and didn't get Dice the ball in the low block. Beside this philosophical difference, they didn't get along personally (or so it has been reported).

In any case, the fact that McDyess's agent was also the agent for Nick Van Exel didn't help. Van Exel got a seven year deal for $77 million with the Nuggets - which might have been helped by an informal agreement that he would deliver Dice for less than the Suns were offering.

The whole fiasco remains a cautionary tale for anyone discussing trading for a player with only one year left on his contract.

Oh, I disagree! If you forget, we basically got Googs as a compensation. That was fun. :p

We almost beat the mighty mighty Lakers with a badly injured Penny, a barely recovered and pretty rusty Kidd, and a void at PF left by Tom Gugliota who, at the beginning of that season, was a very good basketball player. Who knows what might've happened had those injuries never occurred. When you really look at it, that team was opporating at like 55% of what it could've been. Kinda makes ya think....

Anyway, just about every Suns article you look at since the Barkley era is about the "Brand New Suns". In '97 it was Kidd/McDyse, '98 it was Kidd/Googs/Cliffy, '99 it was backcourt 2000, '00 it was Kidd/Hardaway/Marion, '02 it was Marbury/Marion/Hardaway, '03 it was Marbury/Marion/Amare, and now, before the '04/'05 season starts, it's Nash/JJ/Q/Marion/Amare. I guess it's just been a lot of excitement, and a lot of letdowns. But then again, that is the case for 28 teams (now 29) teams every year anyway.

Lol.....I was just cleaning my desk recently and came across the 1st issue of the Arizona Sports Gazette. For those of you who weren't around back then, The Gazette was a local phoenix paper about Arizona Sports teams that was created by the owners of the previous messageboard (Mike O., Alan, Etc).

Only thing worse than that is the copy of the San Diego Union Tribune with San Diego winning the AFC Championship! I just found it buried in my closet yesterday. :D :hulk:

What is it, spring cleaning for all us guys?

Oh man, that wasn't a Blast from the Past! That was a ... whimper from yesterday.

A Blast from the Past is my Jeff Cook poster with his porno mustache. A Blast from the Past is my white-man's afro Joe Proski wig. A Blast from the Past is a picture of me with the ORIGINAL gorilla (before the aerial circus), Ladmo, and Alvin Adams. A Blast from the Past is an autograph from Jerry Colangelo, HEAD COACH of the Phoenix Suns. A Blast from the Past is an audio tape of Cotton Fitzimmons, chastizing Suns fans for booing the selection of Dan Majerle, promising they would "rue the day." A Blast from the Past is a VHS tape of Walter Davis hitting 17 field goals in a row against Golden State (or were they the Oakland Warriors back then?).

OK, I'm not real old, but I'm next closest thing.

:p

Weren't there only one or two issues of that? IIRC 9/11 happened right when they were trying to get it started and it kind of put a kibosh to it.
