Mathematics. They brought 7, we had six to block. The two LBs came on a jailbreak and one hit the RB and the other hit Matt. Simple math on that one got Matt lit up. He'll see that hit for the first time on tape.

BTW, I don't think Lyle was even playing yet...that happened in the third, IIRC.

He was playing. Brown went out in the first half.

Yep. You have it exactly right. Edge blocked the f out of his guy too, the leading LB. If you rewatch the play 10x like I did, you'll see that the LBs were in line behind each other on a delay AND Witherspoon was shielded by the rest of the line, so Leinart doublely had no idea he was coming. The STL front four all pulled the opposite way too. It was a stunningly beautiful blitz from a football standpoint, but sucks ass for us.

Ok, I didn't see the play that Brown went out on, prepping for my daughter's bday party and I watched the second half at the community center during her party so I figured I missed the play in the second half (the radio guys on my drive to the party were talking about the switch during the third quarter, so I figured it just happened then).

QB's get sacked in almost every game for a variety of reasons. Matt like others just happened to get hit in such a manner as to end up with a broken bone. Sometimes the reason may be your Ol broke down or other times the opposition had the right rushing scheme to get to your QB. Just part of football. If Warner had been in there would it have happened? Perhaps and perhaps not. With his experience he might have audible out of the play then again he may not have. I thought Warner should have been in on that play anyway as it made not sense to send in Matt when Warner had been moving the team with precision and there was only about 3-4 minutes left in the half. Warner was much more efficient in moving the team particularly with only a few minutes left. Do not understand that at all. Even the annoucers commented on it.

LOL!

What's awesome is that I got to watch the second half on the community center's big 10 foot screen, while "watching" all the kids climb the rock wall. And the wives all didn't care...in fact I kept updating my wife on what was going on as she painted kids faces.

I too, thought it was a beautifully disguised and executed blitz. I hope Clancy incorporates it into his playbook.

How about when you guys were by the TV and I was 100 feet away, talking to Erin. You gave me hand signals to signify Pass Interference on Tory Holt. :)

Yeah, that was pretty cool.

Also gave you first down signs when Edge ran on that big 3rd and 5.

According to Wolfley, the defensive call was for a "one-guy-behind-the-other" double-blitz and that Matt should have recognized it either during presnap or after the snap and immediately thrown to the guy assigned to running the hot route.

One of those cases where experience trumps mobility. If you're don't know what you're seeing, and don't anticipate where pressure's coming from, the best wheels in the world won't get you out of trouble.

At least, if your name's not Elway. ;)

Wolfley is probably right about Matt seeing it but it was a stunt/delayed blitz and he was looking downfield.

The left side was Gandy/Wells vs the DE/DT.

At the snap, Gandy takes the DE wide left.

The DT slants/stunt inside to the C.

Wells follows the DT and IMO, should have recognized the blitz from two LB's. Instead, he whifs on the first LB and Edge jumps in to block him...leaving the 2nd LB free.

If Wells had even chipped the first LB, then Edge could have taken the 2nd guy easily and no injury to Matt.

This was either the pre snap line call or 100% Wells.

This is a problem for all rookies not recognizing defenses. Some get it quicker than others. I think a number of us have posted that Matt has been slow to recognize defenses and see the field. He has a good enough arm but the game seems to come at him to fast. Hopefully he will improve. I recall Terry Bradshaw as a rookie and everyone thought he was dumb mostly becuase he liked to run and try to runover line backers. He obviously finally got it. Terry also said at the break on Sunday that Kurt came with 11 years of experience and two MVPs and the difference between Matt and Kurt was like night and day. I still think Matt would have been better served to watch Kurt for one year. I think his confidence is now really shaken and his shoulder really hurts. We did the same thing with Kurt as we did with Plummer. Plummer starts off with one good game and we think we have the next Joe Montana. Did not work out that way. At least he can now watch Kurt if he stays healthy and perhaps learn a few things. You never know what is going on inside a guys head and we will only know that about Matt after a couple of years. Like the JJ last year he may not have the Heart the Lion was looking for in the Wizard of Ozz. Whiz is the Wizzard in this version. A lot of people assume Kurt is going to get hurt but you never know. Older people than Kurt have made it through the seasons. He is a smart and krafty dude.

I'd need to re-watch the play, but it looks like the line did the right thing, pick up the inside guy. Unfortunately Matt rolled right into the outside stunt. He either needed to stop and unload the ball or keep rolling out. When the solution is any of our offensive lineman blocking 2 defensive players, we won't pass block very well.

Matt should've realized the defensive positioning prior to the snap. He didn't and got his clock cleaned.

There was no rollout...just a standard dropback...he drops back 3 or 4 steps...sets his feet and gets drilled. Just watched it on Cardinals live a second ago...from two angles.

Pre-snap it looked like straight 4-3. They didnt show blitz and looked to be in cover.
