For the first time in 20 years, the Washington Hatchets will have a new boys varsity basketball coach.
Announced on Friday afternoon by school representatives, Bo Burkhart was named the newest head coach of the Washington Hatchets basketball team and will be introduced on Tuesday in a special school board meeting.
Burkhart will replace Gene Miiller who stepped down in March after 20 years and three state champions at Washington during his storied 50 year career.
Burkhart should be a familiar name to Hatchet fans, as he played his high school basketball at Evansville Bosse for his father, Shane Burkhart, long-time Bosse mentor. Burkhart, a 2016 graduate of Central Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, played point guard at Central Methodist from 2016-18 after two years at Southwestern Illinois College. He was a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach at Southwestern Illinois College, worked as a graduate assistant at Xavier University. For the last two years he has been on the Bosse staff and been teaching at Harrison. He was a three-sport athlete at Bosse and has helped with soccer as well.
Burkhart was selected by a 10-person search committee, including staff members, administrators and board members.
Athletic Director Larry Cochren was at Evansville Bosse when Burkhart played, and is very impressed with what what he brings to the table.
"He comes highly recommended. He is a very hard worker and he works hard on player development," said Cochren. "He has built great relationship with college coaches."
The Times Herald will have more information after Burkhart is formally approved by the board on Tuesday evening.
