Except our offense, especially our inept quitter QB, sucked out loud as well. Don't get me wrong--Lindley sucked--but KM somehow seemed to suck more.
Absolutely ridiculous to even attempt to compare KM to Lindley. Murray has had a few bad games in his career & Lindley sucked in every game he ever played.

The two franchises and their fan bases are nothing alike. I think Cardinals baseball fans are way more passionate and loyal…and if they ever give their team a pass, the 11 years above are the reason why.
One day that will be us, man....one day.

It’s not the owners wealth that should be monitored. If you really want to create equity amongst teams you have to have a hard cap without the ability for cap games. That’s it. That levels the playing field for all.
Fully guaranteed contracts?

1000% accurate. I’m a Cardinal baseball fanatic too & yes, the football/baseball franchises couldn’t be more different. When the football team was in St.Louis, they were no doubt the redheaded stepchild. But, the Championships you listed are the reason for that. That, and the absolute ineptitude of Bill Bidwill.

i dont think this offseason is a function of Mike B suddenly wanting spending restraint or saving money

if there were any season to do that, it would have been a couple offseasons ago when the team was looking at a season of few/ no tickets sold, etc. Yet: they traded for DHop and gave him a new contract. The next offseason, they signed JJ Watt. Traded for Hudson and gave him an extension.

Agree. Couldn’t find a more ludicrous comparison. Look at the winning streak that got them to the wild card game last year. Losing a close game to LA in the ninth inning is not settling for a participation trophy.

This team has no problem spending money. They gave $10m+ a year to the fat oaf that is Jordan Philips. They made Nuk the highest paid WR in the league.

Their issue has been spending it poorly. Something I hope this off season is signally and end to.
Spending isn't what we are talking about.

We're talking about bonus money which comes from team cash at hand.

I clearly did. Those guys have real cash at hand. Bidwills net worth is almost all tied up in the Cardinals.

Jerry Jones owns a business empire as does Kroenke. Nice try, but Bidwill would clearly be amongst the least wealthy owners in the NFL and he's not even close in net worth.
Silly to think a billionaire has ALL his money tied up in one commodity.

Sad truth is you don’t have to win to make money. Maybe we should just reduce the number of teams to 12. Just take the richest owners and let them go at it.
Apparently my team has a limited chance to compete so why should I waste my time rooting for an underdog.

B.S. if you can’t run with the big dogs then get out of the race and stop asking for my support.

The problem with hard cap is that it limits player's salaries and that is something they will never accept. Sports aren't going back to the pre-free agency days and salaries are only going to get bigger with all the monopoly like television money getting tosses to leagues. Owners like Jerry Jones have no problem spending money if it leads to their team's success so if you have owner's with that mentality then teams will be more evenly matched in terms of competition. You won't see stars leaving small market teams because they can't afford to pay them and those teams toiling in 100 loss season's trying to find another star in drafts.

Baseball is obviously the biggest problem because its the only league without a salary cap and I agree with the point made that you have to have a competent GM and one hell of a scouting department just as much as an owner that's willing to spend money but I guess the frustrating part is the Cardinals have space but unlike the Rams who just won the SB they are not actively looking to improve team through free agency and have a GM who has a track record of draft ineptitude and the picks he actually hits on aren't retained (Humphries & Baker only). This isn't the first time ARZ has done this, 2017 offseason was a dud as they lost Campbell and Tony Jefferson and ended up 8-8 that year (1 game improvement from 2016).

Keim may think the roster he ended the year with is a playoff team this upcoming year but I think ARZ finishes behind LA & SF and won't win more than 8 games if they have anything less than a stellar draft class. Again, either you draft well or spend money in free agency. You can't win if you bust in both draft and free agency. They have created even more holes with roster losing Jones and Kirk so they are even further behind the 8 ball now.

Yes, I understand that. Cash vs cap.

I still don't think that's the issue. For sure Bidwill doesn't have some of the resources of other owners but he has enough. I don't think that's the reason for their strategy.

MB annually probably isn't making a ton of money and neither are the Cardinals comparatively.

He just doesn't have the cash. Even smaller market owners like the Bensons or Shad Khan have substantially more money. It's actually the only reason that makes sense.

Our hope has to be that one of the Bidwill kids wants to cash out.

I’ve never got the afraid or unable to spend vibe from MB. Not saying he doesn’t have his issues with meddling or false loyalty.

Players might accept the hard cap, or at least a harder one, if contracts being fully guaranteed come along with it. Having the latter will also make it harder for GMs to play some of the cap games they're playing now.

I guess it depends on your expectations. Last year’s team was eliminated in 1 playoff game. They participated in the playoffs. The last time they won a NCLS game was 2014. Their payroll this year is $162 mil as opposed to $168 mil last season. They openly have stated their philosophy is to make the playoffs and then hope to catch fire. That hasn’t worked very well in a decade. With revenues increasing their payroll is decreasing. DeWill bought the team in 1996 for $150 million. Today the team is valued at $2.245 billion. Seems like expecting a payroll increase is not asking too much. Once again they failed to invest sizable offseason money in starting pitching and now have at least 2 potential starters injured. Two of their remaining starters are former MLB guys who played in the Far East, not known as a path to assured success. Two of this years projected starters missed virtually all last year due to injury, yet they signed only one proven starter who has a spotty history. You seriously believe this is a team pushing for a World Series win. Their trading on their past success to make millions. I don’t expect an LA size payroll but I expect them to spend enough to field a solid team. That requires starting pitching.

Net worth and cash liquidity are not the same thing.

On saying that, I'm not of the opinion that our failure to sign players or manipulate the cap is due to not having enough cash on hand.
Of course they aren't the same thing.

I mean, technically a salary cap is a hard cap in that if you go over you pay a luxury tax. Would that go away with the "hard cap"? I don't see how it would be different than what it is today because contracts will get bigger and bigger to where owners will have no choice but to spend more money but that's why the salary cap goes up every year anyways. Technically, money comes out of their pocket because more of the television and merchandising money will go to players instead of owner's pockets to pay bonuses to lower cap hits.

I just think its a bad look for teams to shed salary. I understand letting declining players go but not replacing them gives fans impression that its not so much about competing as its saving owner's money. ARZ will have $70M in cap space next year as someone pointed out but that's because they won't have anyone under contract. Bidwill will have to shell out big money for Hopkins & Murray but aside from them who knows. Is Humphries worth more than $15M a year long term? Will ARZ re-sign Byron Murphy or lose him to a team that is willing to pay him more than ARZ thinks he's worth? That's why drafting is key and with Keim the future looks bleak as hell.

Man, imagine being a Dbacks fan.

The sooner the Cards are out of the Bidwill hands, the better.

Might be money better spent on players. How many free agents decide based on the plane? Can’t remember anyone ever mentioning it.
Yes but flying is his first hobby
He didn't buy the plane to attract multi Millionaires players who can basically get a private jet whenever they want
