That's an interesting idea. Open the draft to players 18 and older. Have a flat, non-roster salary slot (maybe $100,000 or something), then the teams would be obligated to contribute matching funds to a scholarship pool for non-revenue producing sports.

College players could earn an income while earning a degree. The really good players could move up when ready (and get the bigger payday). Players might stay in school longer. I am thinking of someone like Jahii Carson in particular. AND the schools can profit from it too.

Its hard to see a downside.

They should do it like MLB. Where you don't count for acruing years of service until you reach the majors, but you can still sign million dollar contracts like we see with the top MLB draft picks.

I think that is also a major problem. They probably don't mind a million or two, but they don't want those years counting towards when they hit RFA and outright free agency.

The problem of course with any expansion of the D-league is the risk of destroying NCAA basketball. While NCAA baseball is somewhat popular, its a far 3rd after hoops and football. I'm sure the NCAA would make a lot of noise about some of these ideas.

It sounds like the Suns might even be able to buy out Bogdanovic as early as one season in Europe although two years seems the likely scenario. See article from Paul Coro at azcentral dated 7-7-14. See link below.

Bogdanovic, who the Suns picked 27th in this year's draft, has moved from Partizan Belgrade to Turkish club Fenerbahce Ulker for a four-year contract with a 2016 NBA out, according to Turkish network NTV SPOR. A player still can be bought out of a contract early, and Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough said on draft night that he expected Bogdanovic would spend one to two more years in Europe.
